Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. "The great glory of the American stage is Broadway, and what is acknowledged as the best of Broadway is the best of American theater. Here is the story of four decades of great American theater: not just tales of stars- though these abound in this volume- but also of p…laywrights, lyricists, composers, directors, choreographers, producers, and designers. For heartbreak and triumph, their behind-the-scenes adventures often outdo anything presented onstage." -- Book Jacket Please note the image in this listing is a stock photo and may not match the covers of the actual item. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with '1' on copyright page. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, not price clipped (£18.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy, with foldout map at…rear as called for. 315pp, lavishly illustrated by Alan Lee. Painstakingly restored from Tolkien's manuscripts and presented for the first time as a fully continuous and standalone story, the epic tale of 'The Children of Hurin' will reunite fans of 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings' with Elves and Men, dragons and dwarves, eagles and orcs, and the rich landscape and characters unique to Tolkien. There are tales of Middle earth from times long before 'The Lord of the Rings', and the story told in this book is set in the great country that lay beyond the Grey Havens in the West, lands where Treebeard once walked, but which were drowned in the great cataclysm that ended the First Age of the World. In that remote time Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in the vast fortress of Angband, the Hells of Iron, in the North and the tragedy of Turin and his sister Nienor unfolded within the shadow of the fear of Angband and the war waged by Morgoth against the lands and secret cities of the Elves. Their brief and passionate lives were dominated by the elemental hatred that Morgoth bore them as the children of Hurin, the man who had dared to defy and to scorn him to his face. Against them he sent his most formidable servant, Glaurung, a powerful spirit in the form of a huge wingless dragon of fire. Into this story of brutal conquest and flight, of forest hiding places and pursuit, of resistance with lessening hope, the Dark Lord and the Dragon enter in direly articulate form. Sardonic and mocking, Glaurung manipulated the fates of Turin and Nienor by lies of diabolic cunning and guile, and the curse of Morgoth was fulfilled. The earliest versions of this story by J.R.R. Tolkien go back to the end of the First World War and the years that followed, but long afterwards, when 'The Lord of the Rings' was finished, he wrote it anew and greatly enlarged it in complexities of motive and character: it became the dominant story in his later work on Middle earth. But he could not bring it to a final and finished form. In this book his son Christopher Tolkien (1924-2020), has constructed, after long study of the manuscripts, a coherent narrative without any editorial invention. Jacket and illustrations by Alan Lee (illustratore).

Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. 1st Edition. First collected edition, first impression with full number line. Some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of covers and spine, only one very faint crease to top of spine, price on back cover (£14.99), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy, looks unr…ead. 593pp. Ryhope Wood is three square miles of Herefordshire woodland which is once inside much much more, a labyrinth which spreads over space and time, wherein live all the creatures and configurations, the mythagos, of ancient legend. This great primal forest is fascinating and terrible, steeped in myth and mystery, and no one who passes into it comes out unchanged, if they come out at all. Ryhope Wood is quite unlike anything anyone could ever have foreseen, beyond reality, beyond imagination. In MYTHAGO WOOD, Stephen Huxley has already lost his father to Ryhope Wood, he returns from war to find his brother Christian has followed the family obsession. LAVONDYSS finds young Tallis Keeton adventuring into the very heart of the realm. Classic Celtic fantasy by Robert Holdstock (1948-2009). A scarce book. Cover and illustrations by Alan Lee (illustratore).

Please refer to the photographs for further details) 288 pp. First UK edition, first printing Signed dedicated copy by the illustrator Alan Lee "to Michael with best wishes" Beren and Lúthien is a collection of writings by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien as a single book, published on 1 June 2017. It contains the various versions of the story previously published throughout the volumes of The History of Middle-earth. The common plot is the story of the love and adventures of the mortal Man Beren and the immortal Elf-maiden Lúthien, and how they stole a Silmaril from the Dark Lord Morgoth's crown. Tolkien wrote several versions of their story, the latest published in The Silmarillion, although the tale is also mentioned in The Lord of the Rings. The story is one of three "great tales" set in the First Age of Tolkien's Middle-earth, the other two being The Children of Húrin and The Fall of Gondolin. The tale of Beren and Lúthien was, or became, an essential element in the evolution of the mythology of ancient Arda (the Creation through the First Age) conceived by J.R.R. Tolkien, which were published as The Silmarillion. Returning from France and the battle of the Somme at the end of 1916, he wrote the tale in the following year. Essential to the story, and never changed, is the fate that shadowed the love of Beren and Lúthien: for Beren was a mortal man, but Lúthien was an immortal elf. Her father, a great elvish lord, in deep opposition to Beren, imposed on him an impossible task that he must perform before he might wed Lúthien. This is the kernel of the legend; and it leads to the supremely heroic attempt of Beren and Lúthien together to rob the greatest of all evil beings, Melkor, called Morgoth, the Black Enemy, of a Silmaril. In this book Christopher Tolkien has attempted to extract the story of Beren and Lúthien from the comprehensive work in which it was embedded; but that story was itself changing as it developed new associations within the larger history. To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, he has told the story in his father's own words by giving, first, its original form, and then passages in prose and verse from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed. Presented together for the first time, they reveal aspects of the story, both in event and in narrative immediacy, that were afterwards lost. Nice copy, signed by Alan Lee. With illustrations by Alan Lee. (illustratore). Signé par l'illustrateur.
