First published in book form in1853, this edition was published nearly 100 years later in 1954, a second impression published by Rockliff. Some edge weart to top and bottom of largely pink jacket and spine, top of page block dyed red as issued, corne…rs and folds slightly rubbed, spine faded, some slight time staining to back jacket, some offsetting to endpapers. Not price clipped (10s 6d), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 293pp, illustrated. Cranford is one of the best known novels of Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell (1810-65). It was first published, irregularly, in eight instalments, between December 1851 and May 1853, in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Charles Dickens. It was then published, with minor revision, in book form in 1853. In the years following Elizabeth Gaskell's death the novel became immensely popular. The book looks back to memories of her childhood in the small Cheshire town of Knutsford, Cranford is Elizabeth Gaskell's affectionate portrait of people and customs that were already becoming anachronisms.
