With sixteen full-color tipped-in illustrations by Warwick Goble (illustratore). New edition. Octavo. 280, [2], [2, ads]. 8.5" x 5.75" JAPANESE FAIRY TALES IN THE GOLDEN AGE OF ILLUSTRATION This collection of 38 tales presents the classic folklore of Japanfrom Momotaro and Urashima to The Moon Maidenfiltered through the sensibilities of British-born, Tokyo-raised Grace James. James, daughter of a British Naval officer, recounts many of these tales from memory, "being relics of childish days, originally heard from the lips of a schoolfellow or a nurse." A landmark of Japonisme in children's literature, James bolsters these retellings with the source traditions of Kojiki alongside the full-color ethereal illustrations of golden-age illustrator Warwick Goble. While originally published in 1910, this 1912 "New Edition" includes 16 of Goble's plates and is handsomely bound in blue cloth, unusually well preserved in its scarce original dust jacket. Minor chipping frontis tissue guard, rubbed spots corners, minor pressing spine tips, slight lean, else near fine in spine-sunned, moderately soiled, very good or better dust jacket with chipping to edges and small tears rear panel, in mylar cover. Publisher's blue cloth pictorially stamped in gilt, all edges stained blue, in scarce dust jacket.
