"The Burma Campaign won few headlines during the Second World War, even though the ferocity of the fighting rarely diminished from start to finish. It took the Japanese scant weeks to drive the British out of Burma in the dark days of 1942; the Allied armies spent another three-and-a-half years in a desperate struggle to turn the tables. The soldiers of many races who fought for the possession of Burma faced not only the skill and fanatical courage of Hiroshito's fighting men, who preferred death to the dishonour of surrender; they also had to struggle against a natural enemy, surviving the horrors of tropical diseases and the paralysing monsoon, making their homes in virtually impenetrable jungle. It was a soldiers' war, but the decisions and division of the Allied leaders in council, and the disagreements among senior commanders, invariably dictated how the campaign was fought in the jungles and on the plains. Brigadier 'Birdie' Smith, a highly regarded military historian and experienced soldier, takes a fresh look at the differing British, U.S. and Chinese strategies in Burma, shedding new light on the part played by China in North Burma and the role of Joseph Stilwell, the commanding general of the U.S. forces in China, Burma and India. He also paints fascinating portraits of the leading personalities on both sides: 'Vinegar Joe' Stilwell, the implacable anglophobe; the enigmatic Orde Wingate; the wily Chiang Kaishek; and the luckless Japanese commander, Mutagachi. As Brigadier Smith reveals, there was more to, and behind, the developments in Burma that met the eye." - from the inner front jacket flap.
