Documents include an appointment as Quartermaster from Edwin Stanton, "Directions for Enlisting Volunteer Forces in Ohio (1861)," orders from Gen. Seth Williams (1863), a letter from the mayor of Toledo excusing Russell from reporting to duty in Annapolis (1864), a letter from Russell about his medical conditions (1864), and various other letters. In August 1861, Warren Russell of Toledo, Ohio (1812-1866) wrote to Ohio Adjutant General C.P. Buckingham seeking military service. He was then forty-nine years old and said his business experience suited him for the Paymaster's Department. By November 1861, he was a second lieutenant of the 67th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, having recruited men for that regiment. He served as quartermaster for the brigade. He later received a federal staff appointment as Captain and Assistant Quartermaster, dated March 12, 1864. Bowling Green State University holds Russell's papers from 1863-1864, including forms and correspondence from his service as Assistant Quartermaster of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 11th Army Corps. Archive of official correspondence from Capt. Warren Russell, Quartermaster of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Includes War Department appointments and orders from Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Assistant Adjutant General Seth Williams, and Brig. G (illustratore). Signed.…
