Vergangenheit und Gegenwart des Eichsfelds werden vorgestellt. Die Autoren berichten über Theodor Storms Aufenthalt in Heiligenstadt. Acht Jahre weilte der Dichter in dieser Stadt, und beim Abschied schrieb er, ». mir ist, als schiede ich aus einer zweiten Heimat.« Auch über Tilman Riemenschneider und Heinrich Heines Beziehungen zu Heiligenstadt wird Auskunft gegeben. In Worbis und Dingelstädt erinnern die Autoren an die Zeit des Bauernkrieges, und in Leinefelde zeichnen sie die Entwicklung des einstigen Dorfes bis zur jüngsten Stadt Thüringens nach.
