O exemplar encontra-se em muito bom estado, limpo e sem marcas. -- (Extract:) JAPAN HAS SHOWN itself to have a singular individual character within the varied panorama of Oriental Art. One of its more important facets being the way it has assimilated different cultures, including the one the Portuguese spread throughout the world in the sixteenth century. Of the decorative arts pertaining to that period in Japan, one object the screen - is outstanding. Besides forming part of the daily life of the Japanese people, the screens of the period give us an insight into the aesthetic standards prevailing at the time of the historic meeting between Europe and the Far East, which occurred with the first encounters of the Portuguese and Japan- ese in the early 1540's. Namban screens are an allegoric and symbolic reflection of that meeting, and the unfolding of real events is evident in them. In the Portuguese language the word "biombo" (screen) has become so commonplace that few people are aware of its exotic origin. Not even Rafael Bluteau, a priest of the S. Caetano order and author of the first Portuguese dictionary which began publication in 1712, pointed out the Japanese etymology of the term, though he does employ the word accurately in the plural. He writes as follows: Biombos (screens) - portable furnish- ing of wooden frames covered with cloth, or another material, stuck one to another and folding, and placed in the doorways of houses to shelter them from the wind. While this was how the screens were used in the West, in the East, particularly in Japan, they were used as truly movable walls, which stayed upright by means of the angle the panels formed between each other. As portable objects these screens were used to divide the large inte- rior spaces typical of traditional Japanese construction and also to provide more intimate areas. When in his list of national terms Bluteau writes biombos (screens) in the plural, while not explaining why he uses this semantic nicety, gives us to understand that it does not refer to a single item. In fact, the characteristic Japanese beobu was composed of two units which, together with other pairs of screens, separated spaces of unequal importance and performed a function which was originally more utilitarian than decorative []. - (Extrato:) NO VARIADO PANORAMA da Arte Oriental, o Japão afirmou- -se como individualidade bem caracterizada. Um dos seus traços mais relevantes é o da incorporação assimiladora de culturas diver- sas. Entre elas figura a que os portugueses, no século XVI, divulgaram no Mundo. No âmbito das artes ornamentais daquela época sobressai, no Japão, um objecto o biombo. Além de fazer parte do viver quotidiano do povo nipónico, o biombo deixa aperceber na sua decoração as condições estéti- cas presentes no momento histórico do encontro entre Portugal e o Oriente longinquo - entre portugueses e japoneses. Desse encontro, os Biombos Namban são reflexo alegórico e simbólico onde transparece a narrativa de acontecimentos vividos. Na língua portuguesa, a palavra biombo tornou-se tão comum que a poucos lembra a sua origem exótica. Nem Rafael Bluteau, padre da ordem de S. Caetano e autor do primeiro dicionário de português editado a partir de 1712, assinala a etimologia japonesa do termo, embora empregue com exactidão a palavra no plural. Diz assim: Biombos - armação portátil de grades de pao cobertas de panno, ou de outra matéria, pegadas humas às outras & dobradiças, que se empinão nas portas das casas para as abrigar do vento. Se este era o uso que os biombos tinham no Ocidente, no Oriente, nomeadamente no Japão, serviam de verdadeiras paredes amovíveis segu- rando-se mediante o angulo que entre si fo.
