3 volumes. First edition in book form of articles originally appearing in Pall Mall Magazine. With hundreds of illustrations, including a beautiful photogravure frontispiece in each volume, photographs, many taken by the editor, sketches, reproductions, facsimiles, etc., decorative titlepages printed in black and red. 4to, in the publisher's bright red cloth, the spine and upper cover lavishly lettered and decorated in gilt in a stylized English rose motif, t.e.g. xvi, 393pp.; xx, 337pp; xxv, 351pp. A very attractive set, the interiors are bright and fresh and very well preserved with printing on glossed paper. The bright red cloth is also clean and fresh, the spines unfaded, the elaborate gilt-work is very bright on the upper covers, a bit mellowed at the spine panels, a touch of very modest wear to the edges and corners, Vol. I with a few small unobtrusive drops on the cloth and with the rear endleaves at the inner hinge just started. A LOVELY EDWARDIAN GUIDED TOUR OF GREAT BRITAIN'S MOST FAMOUS AND BEAUTIFUL HOMES. Each volume relays the story of twelve famous properties; construction, design, decor, gardens and farms. The numerous authors drew upon county histories, papers in the various antiquarian and field-club societies, various transaction records, and private family memoirs. While the volumes are dated 1900 and 1902 they were released for the holiday season of the year before. This is a charming collection of British homes. Volume one presents us with Belvoir Castle, Battle Abbey, Charlecote, Penshurst, Blenheim, Warwick, Cawdor Caste, Holland House, Chatsworth, Hardwick, Alnwick, and Lyme. In volume two we tour Compton Wynyates, Levens Hall, Naworth Castle, Cotehele, Longleat, Glamis, Mount Edgcumbe, Blickling Hall, Rufford Abbey, Wilton House, Inveraray and Knole. And finally the third volumes brings us to Wollaton Hall, Dunvegan Castle, Castle Bromwich, Castle Howard, Osterley Park, Clumber, Audley End, Dunrobin Castle, Stoneleigh, Dalkeith Palace, St. Michael's Mount, and Stowe. Contributors include the editor, A. H. Malan, the Dowager Lady Newton, the Countess of Warwick, Lady de L'Isle and Dudley, Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower, and more.

4to oblong (204 × 260 mm). 50 numbered engraved plates in original hand colour. Contemporary half calf over red paper boards. Rare collection of designs for splendid interior decorations. The set depicts oppulent beds, curtains and entire rooms in the Empire style with French captions and scales. Not seen at auction for more than a century. - The series "Recueil de draperies d'Hallavant" appeared from ca. 1810 to 1839 in 7 "cahiers", each containing between 44 and 50 plates. They were published by Osmont in Paris, and later by Pinsonnière. Copies were sold coloured and uncoloured, with and without a title-page. The series was issued without any dates except for the 7th cahier, which appeared in 1839. The earlier volumes can be dated only based on internal evidence of drapery styles. Judging from the number of plates and the style, the present volume presumably is either cahier 2 or 3. - Extremities rubbed; corners bumped. Occasional light spotting near margins; some plate numbers and captions partly cut; the plates in very good condition. A fine copy of this artistic work essential for the spreading of the Empire style across Europe. - Canepa, "French Empire influences on Curtain design in Ackermann's Repository of Arts" in: Furniture History XXXVIII (2002), pp. 123-127 and passim. Ornamentstichsammlung Berlin no. 1278 (incomplete set). Cf. OCLC 81288729.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Handsomely rebound by Dragonfly Bindery in dark blue woven moirà silk quarter spine with printed paper label; and attractive marble paper-covered boards. Green top-staining. With new endpapers. Clean and tight throughout with some foxing to the front tissue guard protecting the title page which has a touch of foxing to the margins at the top and bottom. With two architectural drawings on folded tissue paper laid in on either side of the plates on pages 158-159 by the previous owner, perhaps Elizabeth Bronson. Boldly inscribed on the second front endpaper: "Elizabeth Bronson/ from her generous friend/ Edith Wharton (underscored)" A very handsome copy of Wharton s first work and significant interior design volume. Scarce with a signed presentation by Edith Wharton. The Decoration of Houses, a manual ofinterior designwritten byEdith Whartonwith architectOgden Codman, was first published in 1897. In the book, the authors denounce Victorian-style interior decoration and interior design, especially rooms decorated with heavy window curtains,Victorian bric-a-brac and overstuffed furniture. They argue that such rooms emphasize upholstery at the expense of proper space planning and architectural design and are, therefore, uncomfortable and rarely used. Wharton and Codman advocated the creation of houses with rooms decorated with strong architectural wall and ceiling treatments, accentuated by well-suited furniture, rooms based on simple, classicaldesign principles such as symmetry and proportion and a sense of architectural balance. The Decoration of Housesis considered a seminal work and its success led to the emergence of professional decorators working in the manner advocated by its authors, most notablyElsie de Wolfe. (Wikipedia) First edition with matching dates of 1897 on the title and copyright pages; and the De Vinne Press colophon at the bottom of the copyright page. 1st Edition. With matching dates of 1897 on the title and copyright pages. Interior decoration. (illustratore).
