Part of a project in which the Vatican Museums commissioned nine international photographers to produce true photographic artworks, representing and narrating the Museums themselves, and which have in effect formed a new body of work as part of the Vatican Collection of Contemporary Art. For the first time, the works, the interior and exterior spaces, but also the tourists who pass through them, are used as subjects of works of art and celebrated from unprecedented and multiple viewpoints. The volume offers a series of essays dealing with different themes, including the importance of photography in museums and in contemporary art, the concept of art within art, the dialogue between art and the Church and between contemporary artists and historical collections, as well as the genesis of this new photographic collection acquired by the Vatican Museums. The essays are followed by a focus on the nine visual itineraries, explaining the aesthetic and stylistic characteristics of each one and introducing the images. These include the series by Mimmo Jodice, who photographed faces of Roman sculpture, Alain Fleischer with his swirling perspectives, the unusual itinerary of Rinko Kawauchi which immortalizes all that is not the object of a visit, in a surprising diversity of scenarios. The biographies of the photographers conclude the volume.

Language: English ISBN: 978-88-8271-371-3 Number of pages: 400 Dimensions: 24 x 28 x 3.5 cm Illustrations: 410 b/w and colour The fruit of experiences and important professional results gathered in recent years by the Vatican Museums Ethnological Materials Laboratory, this volume, available in Italian, English and Spanish, is a genuine manual for the restoration of ethnographic material, richly illustrated with colour photographs. Scholars and experts at international level have synergically compared their professional competences in the service of the intercultural formation of future restorers and conservators, sharing reflections on the ethics of restoration and working methods, all aiming at the respect for and enhancement of cultural assets. The first part considers ethical questions, along with sixteen case studies of the Vatican Ethnological Materials Laboratory, which offer an introduction to the practice of conservation: these include Japanese armour, a Polynesian reliquary and a wampum belt. The second part brings together the different case studies offered by some of the world s most prestigious restoration laboratories. The third part outlines the situation of current methodology, collecting the best practices of conservation and hypothesising future prospects in the field of heritage protection. The book concludes with a comprehensive bibliography and sitography.

This catalogue is the result of the cooperation between the Folon Foundation and the Collection of Contemporary Art of the Vatican Museums. It is related to the eponymous exhibition set up in the Vatican Museums for the year 2020, but because of the pandemic delayed to 2022 representing a selection of works on paper of the well-known Belgian illustrator, painter and sculptor. The catalogue reproduces a selection of about eighty works from the vast and successful artistic production that Folon began in the 1960s, consisting of watercolours, collages, drawings in coloured ink, Indian ink, pen and marker pen, and two sculptures. This nucleus is entirely dedicated to the artist's civil and social commitment to the most diverse causes, from ecology to human rights, from marginalisation to isolation, from the condemnation of every war to the affirmation of freedom of thought and expression. Folon is a confirmation of a peculiar continuing attention to the sacred, as evidenced by the series entitled About the Creation (1989-1990), which the artist dedicated to the Book of Genesis and which, unlike the other works shown, will remain in the Vatican collections after the exhibition.

The subject of this fifth supplement to the Bollettino dei Monumenti Musei e Gallerie Pontificie is the collection of textiles coming from pre-Columbian Peru, consisting of 26 finds: fabric fragments, cords and wool yarns, collected by the Swiss chemist Rodolphe Pfister. Initially kept in the Vatican Apostolic Library, the collection became part of the Vatican Museums in 1999, but only in 2012 a systematic study of the fabrics and their classification took place. The results are published today in this volume. In the first part Mario Cappozzo presents the figure of Pfister and retraces the history of the collection, investigating the areas of origin, particularly the excavations and antiques markets in Egypt. Jean-François Genotte then analyzes the archival documentation, in order to outline the historical, geographical and cultural framework in which the textiles were produced. Furthermore, the materials and execution techniques of pre-Columbian culture are analyzed. The second part is the actual catalogue, reporting the essential information about each of the finds inventory number, dimensions, material, culture, production area, dating, bibliography , followed by the stylistic sheet, the technical sheet and the attribution, determined by means of an accurate iconographic and formal analysis. 'Second volume of the Dentro il Palazzo series, dedicated to arts, furnishings and collections of Roman palaces between the late Renaissance and Baroque periods. The prestigious works produced in Rome in the public and private spheres in the late 17th and early 18th century are analysed following the evolution of taste and exploring the distinctive features of the age: colour and magnificence. The first section is dedicated to the codes of decoration and luxury conceived of as fiction; the second considers some expressions of the Baroque imagination in sculpture and architecture; the third section recounts the habits and traditions of court life, such as collecting and elaborate convivial ceremonies. This is followed by detailed notes on specific cases, emblematic of Baroque taste, such as Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati, the sumptuous night nocturnal clocks and the preciousness of the Odescalchi collection. The volume is complete with an extensive photographic apparatus with reproductions of paintings, sculptures, views of rooms and galleries of prestigious palaces, furnishings and ornaments, interiors of churches and basilicas, examples of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, engravings and drawings.'.
