Gilbert Seldes' translation and preface frame the Athenian dramatist's satire on gender and power with modern clarity and humor. Picasso's 1933 illustrations, executed in sanguine line, transform the bawdy and lyrical tone of the play into a suite of restrained yet sensuous classical images bridging antiquity and modernism. Condition: Near Fine in Very Good slipcase. Text and plates crisp and unmarked. Boards bright and clean with sharp gilt lettering and vivid red backstrip. Binding tight. Small bookplate ('Ex Libris Nancy Ann Helfer') to front pastedown. Slipcase sturdy with light edge rubbing and shelfwear. A particularly well-preserved example of this iconic Picasso-Heritage Press collaboration. Copyright 1934 by The Limited Editions Club; copyright renewed 1962 by The George Macy Companies, Inc.; play copyright 1930 by Gilbert Seldes.
