Toledano Binding Style #8; Endpapers by Norman Rockwell; DJ Back Style h. This novel was originally published by Duckworth in 1913, and was first published by Modern Library in 1923. Near Fine+ in a Fair Bro-Dart protected Dust Jacket. The Text Block is clean, white, tight, straight and square, with blue topstain, and no markings of any kind. The Binding is full green boards, color uniform throughout, some fading to the gilt on the front board and spine, gray Rrockwell endpapers, and all corners square and sharp. The mylar-protected Dust Jacket has a faded spine and is missing about 20% of the front panel (lower right area), but otherwise intact. The original price ($0.95) is intact on the front flap and the rear panel. See the accompanying photos. ix, 491, [viii] pages. 5" x 7 1/4". The protagonist, Paul Morel, has to deal with a domineering mother and two very different lovers, and is emotional pulled in several directions.

Bound in the original brown cloth, lettered in dark brown on the spine. This appears to be a scarce binding variant of the first edition, unrecorded in the standard Cabell bibliography by James N. Hall and Nelson Bond. Hall #23 describes three binding variants: 1) black cloth with gilt lettering; 2) brick-color cloth with black lettering; 3) yellowish-tan cloth (code G: only 11-30 copies bound, valued between $480-$720 (in 1974). Could this unrecorded 4th binding variant be as rare as the yellowish-tan copies? Art-deco Dust Jacket design features a full-color painting of a woman in a long, flowing gown, standing in a beautiful garden setting. . First Edition. Hard Cover.
