Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Scarce. First Edition. VG+ Decorative gilt-stamped olive-green cloth boards. Some fading to spine, plus surface abrasion to front cover (see photo). Introduction by Julian Hawthorne (son of Nathanial], with illustrations by Frederic Remington and Thomas Fleming. Richmond, VA: B.F. J…ohnson Publishing, 1898. 266 pp. 8vo. frontis.; 3 illus. plates; 13 photo plates; 68 interlinear illus.; map; book advertisements on last pages. One loose photo plate. Historically intriguing specimen of jingoistic journalism that bore directly on the Spanish-American Conflict of 1898. The book collects Karl Decker's reportage on the Spanish imprisonment (and escape) of Evangelina Cisneros, a fair-skinned Cuban girl, for the New York Journal, the flagship newspaper of William Hearst's empire. Cisneros's case became an international cause celebre when prominent American women such as Julia Ward Howe and First Lady Mrs. William McKinley campaigned on Cisneros's behalf. Ultimately, Cisneros escaped with help from Decker and operatives hired by Hearst. Ships secure with tracking.
