Library of Scandinavian Literature, Volume 11. 425 pages. hardcover. keywords: Scandinavia Drama Anthology. DESCRIPTION - The modern Scandinavian drama is well represented in this volume containing five outstanding pieces for the theater, one from each of the Northern nations. The great variety displayed in Scandinavian playwriting, the vitality of the Scandinavian stage, and the universality of the human condition are well brought out in this collection, which runs the entire gamut from broad comedy to stark tragedy. Denmark is represented by Lion with Corset, in which Carl Erik Soya depicts a great number of the causes of war and belligerency and shows that these causes are not always as impersonal and distant as one would like to believe. The Finnish selection is The Sisters by Walentin Ghorell, a play in which the main theme is loneliness within a family group that is permeated with gossip and false piety. From Iceland comes The Golden Gate by Davit Stefansson, a humorous and salty play based on an Icelandic folk tale. This story of the old woman who succeeded in getting her husband's soul into heaven qualifies as an Icelandic Divine Comedy. From the pen of the Norwegian author Nordahl Grieg comes Our Power and Our Glory, a tendentious drama of Norwegian shipowners and sailors during World War I. Eventful as well thought-provoking, this play is also an example, in somewhat modified form of the total theater. Swedish Nobel-Prize winner Pär Lagerkvist is represented by The Man Who Lived His Life Over, in which are counterposed the protagonist's past and present lives. Marking a major transition in Lagerkvist's dramatic technique, this play parallels the form of a philosophical essay without yielding its dramatic intensity. The plays have been expertly translated, and each one is prefaced by an introduction by a specialist in his field. inventory #48238 Very Good in Slightly Worn Dustjacket.
