This book was initially published in 1949 under the title Patterns and Ceremonials of the Indians of the Southwest . 11 1/4 x 8 3/4 inches 192 pages. Introduction by John Sloan and a preface by Harry L. Shapiro. Both-bound hardcove…r boards; pictorial dust jacket. ------ CONDITION: Book corners bumped, otherwise fine. Dust jacket has small chips and Teras along the edges and on the spine, showing shelf-wear and scuffed. ------ ABOUT THIS TITLE: This book delves into the rich cultural heritage of Native American tribes, focusing on their traditional ceremonial dances. --- Here are some key details: Navajo: Known for their intricate sand paintings, the Navajo people have a rich tradition of dances that are integral to their spiritual practices. --- Pueblo: The Pueblo tribes, residing in the southwestern United States, have diverse dance forms associated with religious rituals, harvest celebrations, and other communal events. --- Apache: Apache dances vary across different Apache groups, but they often involve storytelling, healing, and honouring ancestors. --- Zuñi: The Zuñi people, from New Mexico, have unique masked dances that connect them to their ancestral spirits. ------ ABOUT THE AUTHORS: John Collier (1884-1968) was an American social reformer, sociologist, and a passionate advocate for Native American rights. He served as the Commissioner for the Bureau of Indian Affairs during the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration from 1933 to 1945. Collier worked tirelessly to promote policies that respected Native American cultures, traditions, and sovereignty. His efforts aimed to improve living conditions, education, and land rights for indigenous communities. His tenure as Commissioner left a lasting impact on Native American policy and administration. His commitment to understanding and respecting tribal customs influenced his work on cultural preservation and documentation. --- Ira Moskowitz (1912 2001) was a Polish-born artist who dedicated much of his life to creating Judaic art. His work reflects themes related to Jewish culture, religion, and history. --- Moskowitz s art resonates with the spiritual and cultural aspects of Judaism. His pieces often feature symbolic motifs, biblical narratives, and scenes from Jewish life. He contributed drawings, lithographs, and etchings to the book. His visual representations enhance the reader s understanding of the intricate dance forms. His artistic legacy includes a wide range of works on paper, prints, and paintings. His dedication to Judaic themes has left a lasting impact on the art world, and his pieces continue to be appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts.
