One of the leading skeptics of the 19th century, Kersey Graves began as a Quaker but soon began to question everything in religion. He critically questioned the historicity and began a serious study on the life of Jesus as well as the early centuries of the Christian tradition. He found what he termed "remarkable similarities" between pagan religions and Christianity. His view that Jesus never existed has largely been dismissed by scholars including atheists. Graves' arguments are based on congruent parallels found in other religions; rather than a pure adherence to the Biblical text. From full titles page: "Christianity Before Christ containing startling, and extraordinary revelations in religious history, which disclose the oriental origin of all the doctrines, principles, precepts, and miracles of the Christian New Testament. And, furnishing a key for unlocking many of its sacred mysteries, besides comprising the history of 16 heathen crucified gods." The propositions are established beyond confutation by the historical facts cited in this work, viz: there were many cases of the miraculous birth of Gods reported in history before the case of Jesus Christ; many of these Gods, like Christ, were born on the 25th of December; many of them, like Christ, were claimed to be of royal descent; several of them gave early proof of divinity; many of them were "Crucified for the sins of the world"; and finally, are reported as ascending back to heaven. 436 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
