This realist novel of historical fiction is based upon a real event: the 1906 murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette in upstate New York, his trial, conviction and execution in 1908 by the electric chair. The author examines the life of the murderer to expose the innate flaws that led to the crime. From the library of American actor Zachary Scott, the first husband of Elaine Scott who later married writer John Steinbeck.
