Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. What if rivers could talk and tell their stories? What would they tell us? In What Rivers Know, artist Basia Irland insinuates herself as the voice of major waterways as they struggle to navigate their changing relationships with humans and climate change. By hearing what the rivers have to… say, Irland asserts, we can attune ourselves to the braided fusion of energies in our natural world, better preparing us to meet the challenges posed by climate change and human interactions with the environment. Through these first-person accounts, readers learn the rivers histories, current environmental health status, and evolving relationships with humanity. In addition, Irland discusses innovative practices for addressing pollution, recycling wastewater, and what stepsif anyare being taken to remedy their ailments. What Rivers Know presents us with 25 intimate portraits of rivers from around the world, such as the Seine (France), the Yaqui (Mexico), the Colorado (US), the Singapore (Malaysia), and the Chaobai (China). These accounts are accentuated with an introduction by noted land artist and feminist Lucy Lippard and a foreword by Sandra Postel, recipient of the prestigious Stockholm Water Prize, the Nobel Prize for water. Irlands unique writing style tells a nature story unlike any before, delivering within the writing the experience of being a river. What if rivers could talk and tell their stories? Includes small string loop ennabling the viewer to hang and view the piece in its totality (52 inches long) . Matte medium was used to adhere various materials to paper printing plates: string delineates the course of the Rio Grande / Rio Bravo, and salt creates the textured areas representing the bosque and ocean. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fine. No Jacket. A (partially) standing, or hanging book object or mixed media book sculpture, created by artist Basia Irland in 1989. It consist of an old book that was found with a small group of others in a dry riverbed in the Southwest; these (unidentified) books had been water-soaked at one time & the…n puckered up while drying in the sun. They were found by Irland, who gathered them up & used them as the basis of her "River Book" sculptures; she coated each dried book in yellow beeswax by dipping & then added dribled wax to the surface, each book had first been tied with a sturdy but thin black cord which is provided with a loop, so the book can be hung against a wall or in other ways (although not fully free-standing, it could be mounted on a stand). Only a limited number of these were produced by Irland in 1989 & were featured in an exhibtion held around the same time at Sena Galleries East in Santa Fe. The object is not numbered or signed, but comes with a printed, illustrated 5 x 7" folder provided by Sena Galleries, that shows 4 photos of these book objects, with printed information on Irland on back & also, a photocopied, 3 page 8 1/2 x 11" fact sheet on Basia Irland provided by Sena Galleries. Size of the book object offered here is: 7 inches x 8 1/4 in. Best not hung in an extremely hot room or in direct sun, but one extra bonus, no matter where hung or displayed: the natural yellow beeswax diffuses a very fine & subtle perfume. Examples of this "edition" are now quite rare.
