Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. BOOK DESCRIPTON: 8vo, x, (ii), 254 pgs, portrait plates, appendix, Index. Original blue cloth with red cross in gilt with black gilt titled cover and spine. CONDITION DESCRIPTION: Covers lightly spotted and stained, wear on corners, edges, and spine ends; gilt readable. Interior is clean and tight; former owner's penciled name on front endpaper. With clear mylar wrapper. CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 121st NY is recognized as one of the FOX 300 Fighting Regiments. The regiment was led by Col. Emory Upton, who was to become one of the most influential military thinkers to emerge from the Civil War. Upton was one of the few to recognize technology and advancements in defensive warfare that made traditional tactics obsolete. At Spotsylvania Court House, he was given the task of assaulting the famous Mule Shoe Salient . With 12 hand-picked regiments under his command, including the 121st New York, Upton lead a compact attack formation of about 4,500 men total, to assault the Confederates there in the brigade of Brig. Gen. George Doles. His hour or so of fighting had breached the Confederate lines and secured some 913 enlisted men and 37 Confederate officers as prisoners. Not fully supported, his men were driven back. Though Upton's charge lacked sufficient support to be decisive, the initial success of his new tactic inspired Ulysses S. Grant to implement it in an assault two days later this time with General Winfield S. Hancock's entire corps. Brigaded with the 5th Maine, the 95th Penn. (Gosling Zouaves), and the 96th Penn, the 121st NY was present in twenty-five battles, bearing the brunt of the fighting at Salem Church, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Opequan, Cedar Creek, the successful assault on Petersburg and the final battle with Lee at Sailor's Creek; suffering losses in eighteen different engagements.
