The author presents a two-pronged approach, analyzing the nature of the coal-fuel related particles and conducting laboratory wear tests to determine the effects of various coal-fuel related particles, including the unburned coal-fuel, mineral matter particles extracted from coal, and particles associated with the combustion of coal-fuel. Different types of particles, such as quartz, Al2O3, and MgO, were studied to determine the influence of particle hardness and size. Additional tests were carried out using well-characterized particles of several different types to study the effect of materials properties on wear rate.
