Die nationalsozialistische Verfolgung zwang die aus Kà nigsberg stammende, weit verzweigte jüdische Familie ins Exil. Sie verschwand im Nachkriegsdeutschland aus dem kollektiven Gedächtnis. Heute verweisen nur noch wenige Spuren auf sie: ein StraÃenname in Berlin und ein medizinisches Eponym. Mit ihrer auf die wichtigsten Personen fokussierten Familienbiografie rufen Anat Feinberg und Robert Jütte die bewegte Geschichte der Jessners nun erstmals in Erinnerung - und verdeutlichen, wie sich die Geschichte der deutschen Jüdinnen und Juden im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert in dem Schicksal der Familie spiegelt.Der erste Teil widmet sich den Theaterleuten: Leopold Jessner entwickelte sich zu einem "Theater-Revolutionär", als er 1919 der erste jüdische Intendant des Staatlichen Schauspielhauses am Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin wurde. Die Kritik stà rte sich sowohl an seiner Person als auch seinen häufig künstlerisch innovativen Inszenierungen. 1933 emigrierte er über mehrere Zwischenstationen in die USA. Sein Schwager Fritz Jessner war seit 1928 Intendant am PreuÃischen Landestheater Kà nigsberg, musste sein Amt aber 1933 aufgrund massiven politischen Drucks aufgeben, und emigrierte nach einigen Jahren im Jüdischen Kulturbund in die Schweiz und 1940 schlieÃlich in die USA. Der zweite Teil gilt den Medizinern: Dr. Samuel Jessner, ein bedeutender Sexualforscher im Kaiserreich und in der Weimarer Republik, verstarb bereits 1929. Sein Sohn Max konnte im amerikanischen Exil seine wissenschaftliche Karriere als Dermatologe fortsetzen und entdeckte 1953 eine nach ihm benannte Hautkrankheit mit.
