The dust jacket is in poor condition (tears, chipping, faded spine, discolored interior). 8 ½ x 5 3/4, 232 pages, 16 ounces XX [From the dust jacket flaps] This brilliant study of a Mediterranean rural township is the result of several years spent among the people of the Sierra. When the author first went to live in Alcalå, a small white hill-top town in Andalusia, he found it difficult to penetrate the reserve which Spaniards hide behind the affability of their manners. Time and perseverance surmounted this barrier: and J. A. Pitt-Rivers is able to analyse the social structure of Alcalå with real knowledge and understanding. He dissects the passionate local patriotism of the Andalusian pueblo: its suspicion of the central government and distrust of the outside world; its intense rivalries with neighbouring towns and the divided loyalties of its own ruling group. He describes the popular traditions and beliefs: the customs of courtship and marriage; the accepted ethics of begging and bargaining; the local processions and bull-fights; and the practice of magic. He offers an explanation of the nature, not only of the leaders of society, the mayor, doctor, lawyer and priest, but also of those who live upon the fringe, the smugglers, bandits, witches and gypsies. The People of the Sierra is a tour de force of anthropological research in a field which has never before been explored. XX The People of the Sierra is in my opinion one of the best books ever written on Spain and certainly the most exact and reliable. It should be read by everyone seriously interested in that country or in Mediterranean civilisation. The anthropologist's method applied to a modern though closed community has proved so fruitful that one must hope that other experiments of the same sort will be made (GERALD BRENAN: Manchester Guardian).
