Damage from a previous price sticker on back cover. A short series of three articles written by three different chief migratory bird officers of different provinces to instruct on bird conservation. These are followed by seven pages of bird-related poetry. The contents are as follows: I. The Value of Birds to Man II. How Birds are Protected. III. How Children Can Assist Robie W. Tufts (1884-1982) has been called the father of migratory bird science in the Maritimes. Born in Nova Scotia, he worked in banking while pursuing bird conservation, becoming Chief Federal Migratory Birds Officer in 1919. He particularly pursued education of the public in the conservation of birds. Harrison Flint Lewis (1893-1974) was the first director of the Canadian Wildlife Service. Originally from Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, he became Chief Migratory Birds Officer for Ontario and Quebec before relocating to Nova Scotia. There, with Robie W. Tufts, they created the Nova Scotia Bird Society in 1955, of which he was one of the first presidents. James A. Munro was the first Chief Migratory Birds Officer for British Columbia, and published over 175 works on the birds and environment of the province.…

In very good condition, lightly-aged. The names of the four signatories to the original document are given at the foot. The recto of the leaf carries the transcription, in the same hand, of a letter by 'W: Stiles | Secry', with a list of twelve 'Writs dated 6th: Decr: 1787'. The Custom House letter begins: 'Gentlemen, | Having had frequent Occasion to observe the Incompetency, either from Ignorance or Inexperience, of some of the Collectors and Comptrollers in the Out Ports in the Execution of their Duty, and deeming it expedient, for the better carrying on the Service, and for the Security of the Revenue, that all Persons nominated to the Offices of either Collector or Comptroller in the Out Ports should be regularly instructed in the Duties of those Offices, previous to their being admitted thereto; | We acquaint you, that We have therefore resolved, that, in future, no Person shall be admitted to either of the said Offices in England until he shall have been duly instructed at some Port of considerable Business, to be named by Us'. The document continues with reference to 'a Certificate', to 'a blank printed Copy of such Officers Instructions' and to 'the Waterside Business'.…
