James McPherson, in Battle Cry of Freedom, says of Lawrence that he was radicalized by the Anthony Burns affair in spring, 1854, and quotes him as saying: "We went to be one night old fashioned, conservative, Compromise Union Whigs and woke up stark mad Abolitionists."~~Uncommon, especially in this edition.
