Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good-. J.C. Fireman and "V.E.T." (illustratore). First Edition. This is a vanity cartoon book (also known as the 'As-We-See-'Em' books) which includes a number of interesting people. There is no title page and no text; only about 200 plates of caricatures by one or another of the artists, who were the staff cartoonists for this newspaper. Undated but made around 1905. Rebound: was originally bound in soft leather, and the scarred front cover of the original has been applied to the new leather cover. New binding in excellent condition; overall vg-, as there are occasional light marginal stains on the plates. Notables include B.F. Yoakum, H.E. Huntington, and W.K. Vanderbilt (railroad barons), Isaac and Solomon R. Guggenheim (bankers and industrialists; also there is Wm. Guggenheim, apparently a black sheep who travelled a lot), John R. Dos Passos (leaving a trail of books behind him), Henry D. Estabrook (lawyer), Thomas A. Edison, who seems to have wired the celestial bodies together, Chauncey M. Depew (attorney for Vanderbilt's railroad cartel, and from 1899-1911 a US Senator), Spencer Trask (educator), and a quite prescient drawing of Judge Albert B. Fall, who became the 'fall' guy for the Teapot Dome scandal in 1921. He is shown here taking a miner's pick to a thick book of mining law, on behalf of the corporations.

Aggiungi al carrelloBuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - We define our conscious experience by constructing narratives about ourselves and the people with whom we interact. Narrative pervades our lives--conscious experience is not merely linked to the number and variety of personalstories we construct with each other within a cultural frame, but is subsumed by them. The claim, however, that narrative constructions are essential to conscious experience is not useful or informative unless we can also begin to provide a distinct, organized, and empirically consistent explanation for narrative in relation to consciousness. Understanding the role of narrative in determining individual and collective consciousness has been elusive from within traditional academic frameworks. This volume argues that addressing so broad and complex a problem requires an examination from outside our insular disciplinary framework. Such an open examination would be informed by the inquiries and approaches of multiple disciplines. Recognition of the different approaches toexamining personal stories will allow for the coordination of how narrative seems (its henomenology), with what mental labor it does (its psychology), and how it is realized (its neurobiology). Only by overcoming the boundaries erected by multiple theoretical and discursive traditions can we begin to comprehend the nature and function of narrative in consciousness. ^INarrative and Consciousness^R brings together essays by exceptional scholars and scientists in the disciplines of literary theory, psychology, and neuroscience to examine how stories are constructed, how stories structure lived experience, and how stories are rooted in material reality (the human body).
