Terwijl sociologen en politicologen zich al geruime tijd bezig hielden met de bestudering van de verzuilde Nederlandse samenleving als zodanig, wordt momenteel door de historici met name de vraa…g naar de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het verschijnsel aan de orde gesteld. Men is het er wel algemeen over eens dat de wortels van de verzuiling reeds in de 19de eeuw gezocht moeten worden en dat daarbij niet alleen oog meet zijn voor religieuze, maar evenzeer voor politieke en sociaal-economische ontwikkelingen, die al of niet specifiek zijn voor de Nederlandse situatie. Waar de contouren van de verzuiling op nationaal niveau geleidelijk duidelijker worden, is het beeld van de lokale situatie nog onscherp. Er is nog nauwelijks onderzocht hoe de verzuiling voor de Nederlander in zijn dagelijkse omgeving gestalte kreeg en wat een en ander betekende voor de plaatselijke verhoudingen en de geloofsgemeenschappen en bevolkingsgroepen. Deze gevarieerde bundel biedt een belangwekkende aanzet voor een dergelijk onderzoek naar de lokale aspecten van de verzuiling, waarbij de blik wordt gericht op een aantal Hollandse gemeenten.

Leiden staat niet alleen: steden zijn al duizenden jaren het toneel van strijd. Legendarisch is het beleg van het Griekse Troje, wa…araan een houten paard een einde zou hebben gemaakt. Ruim 2000 jaar geleden bleef een Romeinse senator erop hameren dat `Carthago verwoest moest worden . In de tijd van de kruisvaarders was Jeruzalem het middelpunt van strijd niet voor het eerst, niet voor het laatst. De val van Constantinopel bracht het einde van het Byzantijnse Rijk. Ruim twee eeuwen later stonden moslims aan de poorten van het `roomse Wenen, een aanval die slechts met de grootste moeite kon worden afgeslagen. Ook in de moderne tijd lieten krijgsheren zich niet onbetuigd. In 1870 kreeg Parijs het zwaar te verduren; door honger werden zelfs de olifanten uit de dierentuin opgegeten. Verdun zal voor altijd verbonden blijven met de Eerste en Leningrad met de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Recentelijk werd zowel Sarajevo als Beiroet hevig getroffen. Het rijk ge?llustreerde Belaagd en belegerd bevat de verhalen van beroemde belegeringen uit de wereldgeschiedenis, van de Oudheid tot in onze tijd. Een schatkamer van verhalen over krijgskunst en overlevingsdrang, maar ook over mythe en folklore, en de mensen die achter de grote gebeurtenissen schuilgingen als tactisch brein, maar vooral ook als strijders en, niet te vergeten, als slachtoffers. Belaagd en belegerd kwam tot stand onder redactie van Herman Amersfoort (hoogleraar militaire geschiedenis), Hans Blom (hoogleraar Nederlandse geschiedenis, oud-directeur Nederlands Instituut voor Oorlogsdocumentatie), Dennis Bos (docent/onderzoeker Nederlandse geschiedenis) en Gijsbert van Es (NRC-redacteur).

Dat geschiedenis er toe doet is de afgelopen jaren bij herhaling op allerl…ei manieren gebleken. De zorg over een gering historisch besef en wel zeer beperkte kennis van de geschiedenis leidde in ons land tot allerlei activiteiten om daar iets aan te doen. E?n van die activiteiten was het opstellen van een historische canon van Nederland: een verzameling van historische gebeurtenissen die in brede kring als van belang wordt aanvaard en daarom algemeen bekend zou moeten zijn.Aan het opstellen van een canon zitten veel haken en ogen. Met name in de nationale discussie is er een direct verband met de vragen over nationale identiteit, die op hun beurt weer te maken hebben met de politiek gevoelige problematiek van de integratie van minderheden. Niettemin is na de publicatie van de canon van de commissie Van Oostrom het opstellen van canons een snel om zich heen grijpend verschijnsel geworden. Zo hebben al veel gemeenten inmiddels een eigen canon opgesteld. Het is dan ook een heel aansprekende vorm om kennis over te brengen. Op lokaal niveau is de lading van het debat ook minder groot.
