This work was supported by the Office of Naval Research. The United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) is the corporate research laboratory for the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps and conducts a wide range of basic scientific research, applied research, technological development and prototyping. A few of the laboratory's current specialties include plasma physics, space physics, materials science, and tactical electronic warfare. NRL is one of the first US Government scientific R&D laboratories, having opened in 1923 at the instigation of Thomas Edison, and is currently under the Office of Naval Research. NRL's research expenditures are approximately $1.1 billion per year. The Division of Plasma Science conducts research and development into ionized matter. NRL currently holds the world record for most energetic rail gun projectile (33 MJ) and fastest manmade projectile (334 million MPH). The NRL Plasma Formulary has been the mini-Bible of plasma physicists for the past 25 years. It is an eclectic compilation of mathematical and scientific formulas, and contains physical parameters pertinent to a variety of plasma regimes, ranging from laboratory devices to astrophysical objects.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 201. Modeling the Ionosphere-Thermosphere System brings together for the first time a detailed description of the physics of the IT system in conjunction with numerical techniques to solve the complex system of equations that describe the system, as well as issues of current interest. Volume highlights include discussions of: Physics of the ionosphere and thermosphere IT system, and the numerical methods to solve the basic equations of the IT systemThe physics and numerical methods to determine the global electrodynamics of the IT systemThe response of the IT system to forcings from below (i.e., the lower atmosphere) and from above (i.e., the magnetosphere)The physics and numerical methods to model ionospheric irregularitiesData assimilation techniques, comparison of model results to data, climate variability studies, and applications to space weather Providing a clear description of the physics of this system in several tutorial-like articles, Modeling the Ionosphere-Thermosphere System is of value to the upper atmosphere science community in general. Chapters describing details of the numerical methods used to solve the equations that describe the IT system make the volume useful to both active researchers in the field and students. Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 201. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
