(Rare). ?Het resultaat is bewonderenswaardig. Het inleidend hoofdstuk plaatst het gebeuren in zijn administratief, rechterlijk en kerkelijk kader, waarbij vooral de contradicties tussen lokale, vorstelijke en kerkelijke rechtbanken bij het vervolgen van ketters aan bod komen. (?) In het eerste deel van zijn studie onderzoek de auteur in een degelijke analyse de rol van het humanisme in de beginnende reformatieperiode. De invloed van Erasmiaanse elitekringen (?) op de hervorming, op de polemiek tussen magistraat en geestelijkheid betreffende de hervorming van de armenzorg, alsook de invloed van rederijkers, dichters en straatzangers kan zeker niet geloochend worden. Het was echter geen doorslaggevende factor. De Vlaamse humanisten waren niet in de eerste plaats anticlericaal, maar vonden de Kerk niet meer in staat een ordenend gezag te vestigen in een steeds meer ingewikkeld wordende maatschappij. Het tweede deel is volledig gewijd aan de vestiging en de opbouw van het protestantisme in de voornaamste Vlaamse steden: het binnendringen van de nieuwe leer in Brugge, Gent, Ieper, Kortrijk, Oudenaarde, Aalst e.a. wordt zeer uitvoerig besproken in een vlotte, overtuigende stijl. (?) Het derde (?) deel behandelt de maatschappelijk en religieuze wereld van de nieuwgezinden. (?) Het is onze taak Dr. Decavele te feliciteren met dit (?) historisch meesterwerk, zowel wat de degelijkheid van het onderzoek betreft als de boeiende taal waarin het werd geschreven. Vergeten we daarbij ook niet het belang aan te stippen van het tweede boek, dat de indices en bijlagen bevat (?).
