"Further Experiments with a new Register-Pyrometer for Measuring the Expansion of Solids" , London, extracted from the "Philosophical Transactions", vol 131, 1831, pp 443-458. John Frederic Daniell was born in 1790 in London and is known for inventing an improved battery that replaced the voltaic cell, the Daniell cell. Daniell was a chemist and meteorologist with several important scientific contributions. In 1820 he invented a dew-point hygrometer for measuring atmospheric humidity. His research led to improvements in greenhouses, showing the importance of humidity. In 1831 Daniell became the first professor of chemistry at the new King's College in London. A year later he received the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society for his invention of a new pyrometer, for measuring heat, and for his papers detailing its uses.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate science of meteorology, exploring the dynamics of the Earth's atmosphere with a focus on the enigmatic fluctuations of barometric pressure. The author challenges existing theories and proposes a novel framework for understanding atmospheric phenomena. Set against the backdrop of early 19th-century scientific inquiry, this work critiques the limitations of contemporary meteorological instruments and observational practices, particularly those employed by esteemed institutions like the Royal Society. The author advocates for a more rigorous and collaborative approach to meteorological research, emphasizing the need for accurate data collection and standardized methodologies. Through a series of thought-provoking essays, the book delves into fundamental concepts such as atmospheric composition, temperature gradients, and the interplay of gravity and elasticity in shaping air currents. The author's analysis extends to the impact of temperature variations on barometric readings and the complex dynamics of polar and equatorial air exchanges. Ultimately, this book offers valuable insights into the forces governing our planet's weather patterns and underscores the importance of meticulous observation and theoretical innovation in advancing our understanding of the atmosphere. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - By the early nineteenth century, meteorologists were equipped with plenty of useful devices: barometers, thermometers, hygrometers, and any number of variations thereon. But the nature of these instruments was not wholly understood. While it was possible to take accurate measurements with a barometer, what physical process made the mercury move What exactly is atmospheric pressure And how can one measure sunlight Ranging from wild theories of gravity-resistant air particles to the latest experiments in altitude, chemist and physicist John Frederic Daniell (1790-1845) presents his answers in this collection of essays. First published in 1823, this enlarged second edition of 1827 includes his work on the climate of London, the effect of atmospheric conditions on human health, and suggested improvements for the design of a new hygrometer. Daniell later became the first professor of chemistry at King's College, London, and foreign secretary of the Royal Society.

A rare 1827 edition of the second edition of this work, bound and printed for the University of Edinburgh and awarded as a prize in 1833, with an inscription on first page.Meteorological Essays and Observations is a foundational scientific work by the English chemist and physicist John Frederic Daniell (1790a?1845). First published in 1823, the book significantly advanced the field of meteorology from a collection of observations into a more rigorous physical science. In this work, Daniell sought to explain the physical processes behind weather phenomena rather than just recording them. The book remains in print today. The cream boards, altho.

Provenance: Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland, with their small 1" oval embossed stamp on the first 10 pages of the volume. Text is VG; binding is New. [++] This (first paper) is the first appearance of Daniell's first paper on the construction of the famous "Daniell-Cell", in which he announced his invention of the battery, the first constant and reliable source of electric energy. It is difficult to overstate the importance of this invention. [++] "By lessening polarization, John Daniell (1790-1845) improves the voltaic electric cell and replaces it with a "Daniell cell" which more reliably produces a steady current".--Claire Parkinson, "Breakthroughs", 306. [++] "John Frederic Daniell was a British chemist and meteorologist. Appointed the first professor of chemistry at King s College in London in 1831, he invented a number of important measuring devices, including the pyrometer, which won him the Rumford Medal of the Royal Society. But his most important scientific contribution was his invention of the Daniell Cell in 1836. Before Daniell, electrical experiments depended on voltage generated by voltaic cells. Voltaic piles provided a continuous source of electricity, but they lost power rapidly. Daniell's improved cell drew power more evenly during its continuous operation, expanding the range of possibilities for the application of electricity. Daniell solved the problem of energy loss by taming the buildup of hydrogen in voltaic piles. Putting a barrier between the copper and zinc plates prevented hydrogen from forming, and thus stopped the battery's polarization. In 1837, Daniell received the Royal Society's highest award, the Copley Medal, for his battery. His invention would power a host of emerging technologies, including telegraphy."--ETHW website (Daniell Cell"). "Research in the still new field of current electricity was at this time hindered by the rapid decline in power of the voltaic cell when in use, because of reverse polarization. Investigating the standard zinc copper battery, he found that the decline in power was caused by the liberation of hydrogen gas on the copper plate during electrolysis. In an 1836 Philosophical Transactions paper he therefore proposed a new form of apparatus (known familiarly as the Daniell cell) to prevent such liberation and thus maintain a continuous and even current."--Complete DSB online.
