Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text.; Hardcover (cloth without dust jacket - as issued; 2 volumes, lacks the slipcase).; 23.5 x 31 cm.; 3.4 kg.; 567 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The exterior shows wear marks, edge wear, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. Interior with signs of wear throughout, namely some minor wear marks throughout. The bottom of the first page of volume 1 and 2 has a stamp with a date. Wear marks at the top of the first pages of volume 2. Remaining interior in very good condition on both volumes.; "The purpose of this catalogue is to make available to all lovers and students of Japanese art the paintings and prints gathered together by Mr and Mrs Richard P. Gale in a life- time of collecting. The 'Beautiful Girl' picture, assuredly one of the chief delights of Ukiyo-e, was one of the Gales' own especial favourite kind of picture. Some of the greatest works of this type have found their way into the collection, including paintings that were already famous in Japan and illustrated in the leading art publications of that country before they were acquired. The catalogue gives details of prior illustration, but here might be instanced the superb Eishun 'Courtesan fixing Her Hair', the Moromasa 'Courtesan of Iseya', and the Suio 'Standing Courtesan', all masterpieces well known in Japan for many years before they were secured for the collection. The other crucial factor, opportunity, can be seen operating in the acquisition of a great number of the Harunobu, Utamaro and Hokusai Prints from the collection of Louis V. Ledoux, upon whose death in 1948 part of the collection was disposed of by Roland Koscherak. There are probably larger Harunobu collections elsewhere in private hands, and certainly in some public institutions, but none of them, I feel sure, can show such a high proportion of really great prints from the point of view of design and condition as prevails in the Gale collection. The same factor of opportunity-though not merely chance-must account for the three Enkyo large heads and the two Kiyonaga triptychs, all in pristine state. Perhaps, finally, I should mention another aspect of the collection which gives it an exceptional character among the major private collections of the world. It comprises both paintings and prints of the Ukiyo-e masters, whereas other collections are confined either to one or to the other. It follows that this catalogue is an opportunity to study the work of the masters in both mediums, painting and print, side by side in large-scale illustrations, a feature which must distinguish it from other catalogues of a similar kind, over and above the excellence of the objects themselves. The collection has comparatively few works outside the genre and Ukiyo-e sphere, but such examples as there are hint at the diversity of styles of painting in Tokugawa Japan and provide a reminder, by their direct contrast, of that wider world of art of which Ukiyo-e was only one aspect and in its day - however hard we may find it to believe - of least account." excerpt from the introductory text by Jack Hilier.
