Poesía Prehispánica: Es probable que las muestras todavía existentes de la poesía prehispánica no sean anteriores al año 1430, aproximadamente. Por aquella fecha la escritura indígena comenzaba a pasar desde lo pictórico hacia la escritura simbólica, acaso fonética, y los códices servían de guía para la interpretación del especialista; es razonable suponer que los textos incluidos sean del siglo anterior a la llegada de los conquistadores, con trozos más antiguos conservados en la tradición oral, tal y como se conservaban muchos romances. El poeta gozaba de elevado rango, ya que la poesía desempeñaba papel religioso dentro del rito. El verso náhuatl, lengua de casi todos los poemas existentes, era acentual, aparentemente de medida fija. Para llegar a la medida establecida, gozaba el poeta de libertad sintáctica y empleaba ciertas palabras cuya función todavía no aclarada del todo parece haber sido el de combinar con el ritmo acentual para alcanzar la medida. Entre las técnicas más importantes figuran el paralelismo, el estribillo y las imágenes en serie. Estas imágenes llegan al convencionalismo en el uso constante de la piedra preciosa, las flores y las aves. [ ] Breve Introducción A La Poesía Mexicana: La poesía mexicana forma parte del gran caudal de la literatura hispánica; nace como rama de la española, y es manifiesta su relación con ésta a través de los siglos. Igualmente manifiesto es el hecho de que es una poesía distinta en muchos sentidos, acondicionada por otras corrientes históricas, otra geografía, otra mezcla étnica, otro hemisferio. Estudiarla sin tomar en cuenta estas condiciones daría como resultado, cuando menos, una interpretación extraviada de su naturaleza. Desde sus comienzos el mexicano ya no es el español, sino la mezcla de lo espanol y lo indio. Psicológicamente, es un ser nuevo, y su poesía pronto revela esta característica de recién nacida: giros locales, modificaciones de pronunciación y entonación, y hasta ese extraño y tan debatido «medio tono» que condujo a la polémica sobre la «mexicanidad» de Ruiz de Alarcón. Hasta qué punto influye y ha influido en la poesía la doble herencia psicológica es cuestión debatible, pero es innegable que la poesía mexicana se diferencia de la española, como también es distinta de la cubana o de la argentina, pongamos por caso.
