This volume revolves around three men who knew each other well, oversaw the political and spiritual life of much of northern France and Flanders during the first third of the twelfth century, and died within five years of one another: Charles the Good, count of Flanders from 1119 to 1127; John of Warneton, archdeacon of Arras from 1096 to 1099 and bishop of Therouanne from 1099 to 1130; and their common biographer, Walter, archdeacon of Therouanne from 1116 to 1132. The volume includes a detailed historical introduction and offers new editions of Walter's vitae of Charles and John and of several other pieces - poems on Charles's death, his epitaphs, the record of the inquest into his murder - that, taken together with Walter's Vita Karoli and the edition of Galbert of Bruges' De multro, traditione, et occisione gloriosi Karoli comitis Flandriarum that has already appeared in this series (ed. (JÖB XXI(1972) 241-9). Since the millenary celebrations of the Lavra in 1963 reawakened interest in its founder, scholars concerned to evaluate the ?Lives? have frequently lamented the lack of a critical edition. This J. Noret has now provided, for the first time uniting the two ?Lives (A and B) in a single, accessible volume. ?N.?s long introduction falls into two main parts, of which the first and larger (?) deals with the text. A careful account of all known MSS is followed by the construction of a critical stemma for each Life. (?). The second part of the introduction examines the evidence for the connection between the tow ?Lives?, for their date and place of composition (?). N.?s conclusions are convincing. La Clavis Patrum Graecorum nous renseigne sur l'ensemble des textes de Peres grecs: les editions, les traductions anciennes, l'authenticite des textes, etc. Cinq volumes et un Supplement ont paru. Cet ouvrage constitue un instrument de travail indispensable pour tous ceux qui s'interessent a la litterature grecque chretienne. Le tome III de la Clauis Patrum Graecorum, qui etait epuise, vient d'etre a la fois reimprime et mis a jour. Ce tome, qui date de 1979 et concerne les auteurs chretiens des annees 400 a 750 environ, a ete reimprime anastatiquement, donc sans aucune correction, mais dans les marges, aux endroits convenables, un S a ete ajoute chaque fois que le Supplementum (paru en 1998) vient completer ou corriger le texte de 1979. De plus, on a profite de l'occasion pour mettre le travail a jour : une bonne cinquantaine de pages d'Addenda tiennent compte des publications de 1988-2002 ainsi que d'editions et d'etudes anterieures qui avaient echappe jusqu'ici ; pour que ces additions nouvelles ne passent pas, elles non plus, inapercues au lecteur presse, un A a ete imprime dans la marge de la reimpression anastatique, la ou il importe de consulter aussi les Addenda. Ceux-ci, comme le Supplementum de 1998, recensent evidemment quelques auteurs et un certain nombre de textes qui auparavant n'avaient pas trouve place dans le repertoire. L'ensemble, qui compte desormais plus de 650 pages, conviendra donc particulierement aux erudits et aux bibliotheques qui ne possedent pas encore le t. Hardback, LXII+385 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503405612. Ce long commentaire de l'Ecclesiaste a ete publie par Migne (PG 98) au XIIe siecle sous le nom de Gregoire d'Agrigente. Mais ce nom n'apparaissant que dans un manuscrit du XVII/XVIIIe siecle, la question de l'authenticite doit etre discutee; elle est evidemment liee a la datation, quelque part entre le Ve et le Xe siecle. Le commentaire, dont l'edition a ete notablement amelioree grace a un manuscrit ancien trouve a Jerusalem et jamais utilise jusqu'ici, est remarquable: malgre l'apparente difficulte du texte biblique, il favorise toujours une exegese litterale, l'exegese anagogique ne venant qu'en second lieu, lorsque le sens premier n'est vraiment pas satisfaisant. Au passage, l'auteur, qui se refere occasionellement a Aristote, s'en prend notamment aux exegeses de Gregoire de Nysse et de Didyme. Il y a vingt-quatre ans paraissait le deuxième volume de la Clauis Patrum Graecorum, qui fut salué par le grand patrologue M.Aubineau comme "un événement scientifique". La Clauis qui fut achevée dans les années qui suivirent, eut un succès considérable. Les comptes-rendus des patrologues les plus éminents étaient unanimement élogieux. La Clauis devint un instrument de travail indispensable, non seulement pour les patrologues, mais également pour les orientalistes qui y trouvèrent, à leur surprise, d'anciennes traductions orientales. Les numéros de référence de la CPG furent rapidement utilisés dans toutes les publications et même dans les catalogues de manuscrits, si bien que la Clauis devint incontournable. Bientôt vingt-cinq ans se sont écoulés et l'activité patristique est plus vivante que jamais. De nouvelles éditions, de nouvelles études se succèdent à un rythme élevé, et la Clauis menaçait d'être dépassée. Une nouvelle édition, comme celle de la Clauis Patrum Latinorum qui connaît sa troisième édition en moins de cinquante ans, s'imposait donc à brève échéance. Mais la préparation d'une version entièrement remaniée est une entreprise de longue haleine.
