La Pars quarta, consacrée aux inscriptions « sabéennes et himyarites », a comporté trois tomes, parus en 1889, 1911 et 1929. Depuis lors, la publication est arrêtée, c est-à-dire depuis près de cinquante ans. Le manque de cet outil de base est ressenti par les spécialistes, mais aussi - à présent - par les Arabes eux-mêmes auxquels il manque une somme des documents de leur passé, où ils puissent apprendre à le connaître et à l étudier ; il est ressenti enfin par tous les humanistes qui commencent à découvrir suffisamment la culture sud-arabe antique pour se rendre compte que les moyens de la connaître font défaut. Il était donc de l intérêt général que l on parvînt à reprendre la publication de la Pars quarta du Corpus. Mais ce n était pas chose facile. On conçoit bien qu un tel recueil dût être tout autre chose qu un amas de documents, sans ordre interne, alignés sous une numérotation. Mais dès que l on cherche une méthode de classement qui convienne à des documents non seulement déjà parus mais aussi à découvrir, on se heurte à des difficultés telles qu elles ont, en fait, provoqué l interruption de la publication de cette Pars quarta. Il est des cas où l attachement à la tradition et la pleine conscience de la valeur d une formule (comme celle du Corpus) ne peuvent se traduire que par une refonte qui conditionne la survie. Et nous avons l heureuse possibilité de viser à restaurer cette grande entreprise au niveau de ses ambitions premières, en fonction de conceptions nouvelles nées de la réflexion sur l expérience passée Jacqueline Pirenne "" *************************** ref fav-04C-75623 & réf 201.

Depuis lors, la publication est arrêtée, c est-à-dire depuis près de cinquante ans. Le manque de cet outil de base est ressenti par les spécialistes, mais aussi - à présent - par les Arabes eux-mêmes auxquels il manque une somme des documents de leur passé, où ils puissent apprendre à le connaître et à l étudier ; il est ressenti enfin par tous les humanistes qui commencent à découvrir suffisamment la culture sud-arabe antique pour se rendre compte que les moyens de la connaître font défaut. Il était donc de l intérêt général que l on parvînt à reprendre la publication de la Pars quarta du Corpus. Mais ce n était pas chose facile. On conçoit bien qu un tel recueil dût être tout autre chose qu un amas de documents, sans ordre interne, alignés sous une numérotation. Mais dès que l on cherche une méthode de classement qui convienne à des documents non seulement déjà parus mais aussi à découvrir, on se heurte à des difficultés telles qu elles ont, en fait, provoqué l interruption de la publication de cette Pars quarta. Il est des cas où l attachement à la tradition et la pleine conscience de la valeur d une formule (comme celle du Corpus) ne peuvent se traduire que par une refonte qui conditionne la survie. Et nous avons l heureuse possibilité de viser à restaurer cette grande entreprise au niveau de ses ambitions premières, en fonction de conceptions nouvelles nées de la réflexion sur l expérience passée Jacqueline Pirenne "" *************************** ref fav-04C-75623 & réf 201.
