This scarce original edition is offered despite problems of condition. 6 issues bound as one volume, not including original wraps or advertisements. Octavo, 10" tall, [2] + 620 + 4 engraved plate pages, quarter cloth over boards. A good copy only, given that the covers and fly-le…aves are loose, the cloth back strip is partially missing, the boards are edge worn scuffed and worn through at the fore-corner tips--BUT the interior is in very good condition, paper clean, supple (pre-civil war paper was of a generally higher quality) only lightly yellowed, and relatively unfoxed. Still a good reading copy of this mostly original compendium of the culture in the middle of the 19th Century. A period time-capsule of the intellectual state of mind.

Auguste Le Barbier de Blignières (1825-1851) was a professor of rhetoric at the Collège Stanislas in Paris. He wrote many books on language and grammar, and is well known for his book "Essai sur Amyot et les traducteurs français au XVIe siècle" (Paris, 1851) about Jacques Amyot (1513-1593), the French Renaissance writer and translator.
