Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. First U.S. Edition. 128 pages. Oversized book, measuring 12 inches by 10 inches. Topics covered include Introduction, the American Revolution, the French Revolution, Chronological Charts, Further Reading List, Acknowledgments, and Index. Esmond Wright (5 November 1915, Newcastle upon Tyne - 9 August 2003, Masham, North Yorkshire) was an English historian of the United States, Director of the Institute of United States Studies at the University of London from 1971 to 1983, a television personality, author, and a Conservative politician. He was awarded the Benjamin Franklin Medal in 1988. There is good reason to treat the American and the French revolutions together. Although it is true that France and the Thirteen Colonies were in many respects very different, yet events in the two countries formed part of a larger whole. It was French support that enabled the Americans to win a clear decision in their war of independence. But in thus helping to dismember the British Empire, the French monarchy was only briefly to enjoy its moment of revenge. The expense of the American war turned France's chronic deficits into financial paralysis, and brought about a breakdown of the social order. The example of rebellion in America led directly to the French Revolution.
