Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Jacket design by Ben Feder, Inc. (illustratore). Book Club Edition. This brilliant novel adds John le Carre's name to the microscopically small list of really great writers of espionage fiction. In truth, it does a great deal more. It is the spy novel to end all spy novels. It dispatches the spun-sugar secret agents of recent fame back to their comic-opera Graustarks forever. Its central figure, Leamas, whose mission is to trap the top spy of East Berlin, is a creation of astonishing reality and authenticity. The plot he sets in motion, and later becomes the principal victim of, is a thing of magnificent complexity. Also of far-reaching implications. For the tension within Leamas is strikingly contemporary. It is the tension of a committed man unable to come to terms with the utterly ruthless machine he serves. John Le Carre is the pseudonym for a British civil servant employed in one of the Whitehall ministries.

Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Feder, Ben - Jacket Design (illustratore). Assumed First Edition. 224 Pages Indexed. Copyright 1964 and first released September 1. Orange boards with black quarter-spine with gold decorations and endpaper maps of the principal wagon roads. Book is brand new gift quality condition. Jacket is price clipped and has a quarter inch closed tear at the top. Includes maps, illustrations, table, notes, and bibliographical notes. This is number two of eighteen in the Holt, Rinehart and Winston Histories of the American Frontier. Like the other books in this series, it tells a complete story; it may also be read as part of the broader history of westward expansion told in connected form in these volumes. Professor Winther's book is unique in that it is the first serious study of all aspects of western transportation, from the advent of overland freighting to the era of the automobile. It is the first to recognize that water transportation played an important role in the occupation of the Far West, and to gauge the influence of traffic on the Missouri and Colorado on settlement and military operations. It carries the reader back to those days of primitive conveyances and allows him to realize the discomforts of a stagecoach ride or the thrill of a journey on one of the luxurious Palace Cars of George Pullman. And, by no means least important, it is the first to allot the now-forgotten bicycle its proper credit in stimulating the Good Roads movement across the nation. Paved highways shrank distances even more than railroads; as they spread across the West the pioneer era in the history of American transportation drew to a close. These contributions correctly suggest that this is a work from which both scholars and the historically curious can gain much in information as well as pleasure. Like the other books in this series of 18, it tells a complete story; it may also be read as part of the broader history of westward expansion told in connected form in these volumes.

A near fine, unmarked copy of Kreyche's introductory text on metaphysics, "written in a manner that enables the reader to know philosophy rather than know about it, this new text integrates the doctrine of analogy with the whole of metaphysics. Among the unique features of First Philosophy is a special chapter on the knowledge of being, in which emphasis is placed on the meaning and importance of the kind of "abstraction: that is peculiar to metaphysics alone, the all-persuasive character of the metaphysical 'judgement of separation,' and the intrinsically analogical character of first principles" (from the publisher). Pp 328 [i-vi], vii-xviii, [xix-xx], 1-328, [329-332]. Faint shelf wear to spine ends. Wrapped in a good+ jacket that is chipped at the head of the spine and lightly so around around edges. Small open tear on the back affecting a few lines of the author's bio.

She becomes even more upset when she finds Annette dead in the foyer, lying in a puddle of blood. Thanks to her haughty attitude, the late film actress more famously known as Annette LeBaron had made enemies out of half the town of Van Brunt, New York-but were any of them inclined to kill?Captain Heimrich intends to get to the bottom of all the drama. Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Jacket design by Ben Feder, Inc. (illustratore). 1st Edition. Signed and inscribed by J. Edgar Hoover to a U.S. diplomat, this Cold War-era volume connects directly to the political and intelligence world it seeks to describe. Written during Hoover's tenure as Director of the FBI, the book outlines his views on communism in the United States at the height of postwar tension, offering a revealing primary-source perspective on mid-20th century American anti-communist ideology. Inscribed by J. Edgar Hoover on the front free endpaper: 'To Carroll Brown, Best Wishes, J. Edgar Hoover, Xmas 1958.' A clear, fully legible and contemporaneous inscription. Carroll Brown (1928-2019), a U.S. Navy veteran and Foreign Service officer who later served as Deputy Director for Eastern European Affairs and U.S. Consul General in Germany. Brown's career placed him within the very diplomatic and geopolitical sphere central to Hoover's concerns, making this a compelling association copy linking author, subject, and recipient within the Cold War security establishment. His affiliations with the Foreign Service Association, Army-Navy Club, and World Policy Institute further underscore the historical context and significance of this provenance. Condition is Good overall. The book itself presents above the overall grade, with the lower designation driven primarily by the condition of the dust jacket. The red cloth binding is sound with moderate edge wear and bumping. The original dust jacket is present and intact but in Poor condition, with heavy chipping, tearing, and losses, particularly along the spine and edges. Interior pages are clean with light toning; the inscription remains clear. Despite the worn jacket, this is a desirable signed copy with enhanced historical interest due to its documented association. J. Edgar Hoover (1895-1972) served as the first Director of the FBI and one of the most influential - and controversial - figures in American law enforcement. His role in shaping domestic intelligence and anti-communist policy during the Cold War makes his signed works enduringly collectible, particularly when tied to figures active in U.S. diplomatic and security circles. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Feder, Ben (Jacket Design) (illustratore). First Book Club Edition. 1961 at copyright; no other dates. Bluish green boards, yellow spine titles, light shelf wear. Deckled pages near fine, clean; no writing. Bright yellow top-stain. Bind fine; hinges intact. Scarce dust wrapper, light shelf wear, rub; protected in new, clear sleeve. Intriguing jacket design by Ben Feder features blue-green imagery of sculpture w/yellow spine titles; sculpture depicts muscular bodies embracing w/cubes as heads melting into each other amid several faces discovered of transmogrified alien faces w/three fingers/teeth biting in. Portrait of finely dressed Heinlein at back panel engrossed in book. Very attractive. Code 1881 at back flap. Robert Heinlein's Hugo Award-winning all-time masterpiece, the brilliant novel that grew from 'cult' status to mass control bestseller to deemed sci-fi classic. Intriguing as this 'communalism,' masked as more refined or correct status of mind, led to the blueprint of the generation grokking its contents. Also set the table for the 'space' race and Kubrick's odyssey, and mixed class messaging as in we own it all and thou shall share in squalor. Raised by Martians on Mars, Valentine Michael Smith is a human who has never seen another member of his species. Sent to Earth, he is a stranger who must learn what it is to be a man. But his own beliefs and powers exceed the limits of all others, and as he teaches them about grokking and water-sharing, he also inspires a transformation that will alter Earth's inhabitants forever. According to review of Brooks Peck: Stranger in a Strange Land, winner of the 1962 Hugo Award, is the story of V. Michael Smith, born during, and the only survivor of, the first manned mission to Mars. Michael is raised by Martians, and he arrives on Earth as a true innocent: he has never seen a woman and has no knowledge of Earth's cultures or religions. But he brings turmoil with him, as he is the legal heir to an enormous financial empire, not to mention de facto owner of the planet Mars. With the irascible popular author Jubal Harshaw to protect him, Michael explores human morality and the meanings of love. He founds his own church, preaching free love and disseminating the psychic talents taught him by the Martians. Ultimately, he confronts the fate reserved for all messiahs. The impact of Stranger in a Strange Land was considerable, leading many children of the 60's to set up households based on Michael's water-brother nests. Heinlein loved to pontificate through the mouths of his characters, so modern readers must be willing to overlook the occasional sour note ("Nine times out of ten, if a girl gets raped, it's partly her fault."). That aside, Stranger in a Strange Land is one of the master's best, provocative as he always loved to be. Can you grok it? Printed in the USA. 414 pages. Insure post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
