The bottom edge of the spine strip is a little frayed; the top edge is less so. The boards' bottom corners are threadbare. Water stain is on the top end of each board, the top end of frontal matter (up to 2 in.), the first 19 pages ( up to 1 in.) and the top end of the last 40 pages (up to 3 in.); the smaller stains are very faint. The first two pages and the last three pages are foxed. The endpapers' folds are darkened; 3 in. of the back one is split. The text block ends are darkened. Story of the Mount of the Holy Cross, the northernmost fourteen thousand foot mountain in the Sawatch Range, part of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, the northeast face of which bears a distinct cross-shaped snowfield. The first recorded ascent was in 1873 led by Ferdinand Vandiveer Hayden, to whom this volume is dedicated; the expedition included photographer William H. Jackson who also kept a diart of the climb. The powerfully symbolic mount is vividly immortalized in Jackson's wet plate photographs, artist Thomas Moran's painting, and Longfellow's poem "The Snowy Cross". Co-author Clarence S. Jackson is the son of photographer Jackson; a composite photographic rendition of his father's original work is included in the book's illustrations.

Overall, a Near Very Good copy in a like, unclipped dust jacket, which has chipped bumps to the spine ends and cover corners, a tear which begins at the head of the rear hinge and ends across the letter "e" in the first word of the title, but does not affect the legibility. The jacket also has creased wear with a few short tears to the edges, a 1" x 1" loss to the tail of the front, and rubbing to the covers with minor staining to the back and a touch of sunning to the spine. The jacket is wrapped in Mylar.
