Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 17.25cm. Dust jacket rubbed with some stains and soiling; nicks and scuffing at edges; front flap's top corner is price-clipped. Red buckram cloth;… maroon and gilt stamping adorning spine; bumping to board corners. Deckle fore-edge; light soiling and staining to text block's top and bottom edges. Two slender light streaks of blue ink near bottom of copyright page (i.e. page iv); interior pages are otherwise clean. Two items laid-in between pages 362-363 - {#1} an undated get-well card with eighteen inscriptions wishing improved health presumably from office staff and aides but not one specifically naming the senator; and {#2} folded single-sheet February 1973 Newsletter No. 42 "Jim Allen Reports to the People" with comments regarding the Vietnam ceasefire, reinstatement of the death penalty, opposition to Supreme Court's January 22, 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, etc. Binding is firm. James Allen, United States Senator from Alabama, served from January 3, 1969 until his passing by heart attack on June 1, 1978. Unfortunately no ownership signature present but the book was acquired directly from the estate of Senator Allen's widow, Maryon Pittman Allen (1925-2018) who too served as U.S. Senator filling her husband's seat on an interim five month appointment by Governor George Wallace. Please note that this thick book has an approximate shipping weight of 3.75 pounds (1.7 kg) and may require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail. {AmHist-Shelf#2}.
