India and the resurgent Taliban. Conclusions. Select bibliography. Taliban a timeline. Index. The Taliban were gold like figures for a war torn country's war weary people. They promised to rid the country of anarchy lawlessness and disintegration and thus earned the support of Afghans. The Taliban were defeated or so we were told by the Americans when the Frankenstein came back to haunt them. The Taliban were consigned to the dustbin of history or so we thought when Hamid Karzai was anointed as the newest ruler in Kabul. However if lessons of history canons of geo strategy and reports from Afghanistan are anything to go by Taliban were not done away with not by default but by design. The author rejects the widely believed argument that the Taliban movement has been defeated once and for all. The author claims that the endgame in Afghanistan is likely to be an eventual induction of the Taliban elements into the Afghan Government by way of a consensus reached among Pakistan the US and Karzai. However in the course of time such a status quo is unlikely to endure. Pakistan's internal and geo strategic compulsions will prompt it to advocate for more and more space for the Taliban in the Afghan Government. In short this study is an in depth analysis of the raison d'etre of the rise fall and resurgence of the Taliban. 138 pp.

This new found warmth more than mere cold peace something that has traditionally characterised the relationship between the two countries has started manifesting in an urge to engage the other country with a positive frame of mind explore the finer aspects of the other and impelled an unprecedented popular momentum generated by the expectations of ordinary Indians and Pakistanis. The leadership in both India and Pakistan has not just accepted that they are willing to go beyond their stated positions but have realised that the welfare of the other is essential to their own. The people of Jammu and Kashmir are also undergoing an attitudinal metamorphosis towards realism and the imperatives of peace stability and prosperity. Still much remains unchanged. Mindsets suspicion terror tactics and political compulsions created by age old nationalist rhetoric remain potential wild cards in the ongoing process towards positive peace. Thus much of the challenging journey still lies ahead. This volume is an attempt to capture these diverse readings and views analyse the prospects of peace and the potential wild cards and present these before a discerning audience. 308 pp.

Since adopting liberal economic policies two decades ago, India has become one of the two fastest growing economies in the world. While India has been reaching out to various regions such as Southeast Asia and the Middle East for expansion and strengthening its linkages, its relations with its immediate South Asian neighbours remain problematic. Her bilateral relations with the other regional countries have traditionally been contentious due to border issues as well as the fears and resistance of smaller countries to an Indian hegemony in the region.

New Directions in Indian Foreign Policy aims to explore Indian Foreign Policy since the end of the Cold War and investigate the latest trends in India's foreign policy behaviour. The book covers a whole range of issues including India's nuclear identity, climate change, resource crunch, and diplomacy, India's great power aspirations, and domestic influences on foreign policy making. Considering that the end of the Cold War is widely understood to be a game changer for Indian Foreign Policy, it is an opportune time to ask whether India has indeed embraced a new foreign policy. In other words, two decades since the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the economic liberalization process and the coalition politics in the country, what are the changes and continuities in the contemporary Indian Foreign Policy. There is a dearth of comprehensive works on India's Foreign Policy outlook in the post-Cold War era. Thus, this book aims to fill this gap in the discipline of international politics. The focus of the book is not so much about what has changed for India, but how India has adapted or responded to the changes around it. The volume aims to produce important theoretical insights on Indian Foreign Policy. It also analyses the various aspects and implications of India's desire for greater global influence. (jacket).
