Drawing upon some of the earliest postwar demographic evidence, Lestschinsky analyzes the catastrophic losses suffered by Jewish communities across Poland, the Soviet Union, Romania, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, and other occupied territories, while also documenting the destruction of communal, educational, religious, and cultural institutions.
