Drawing on theatrical manuals, promptbooks, and surviving films, the authors trace how techniques from melodrama and pictorial theatre were carried into the early feature film and transformed by the requirements of the new medium. Published by Oxford University Press, the study revisits a subject largely neglected since the mid-twentieth century and incorporates the scholarly reassessment of early cinema that emerged in the 1980s and 1990s.
