Avec les femmes et les sables, la communauté gitane représente l'autre grande source d'inspiration de Lucien Clergue qui, dès 1955, intègre le sujet en se rendant aux Saintes Maries de la Mer où se déroule chaque année le fameux pèlerinage en l'honneur de la sainte patronne des gitans Sarah la Noire. Il est alors fasciné, comme Jean Cocteau, par leur mouvement, leur vitalité rythmée par la danse. Les cinq photographies de ce livre d'artiste, tirages argentiques modernes réalisés par l'artiste dans son atelier arlésien pour Jean-Paul Martin des Éditions de Rivières, et soigneusement contrecollés sur beau papier, nous entrainent, au rythme des quatrains de Jacques Outin qui fonctionnent comme un miroir poétique des images attenantes, sur la route des Saintes-Marie-de-la-Mer avec les dormeurs allongés au bord du chemin, en 1960 (1ère photographie), au coeur des festivités et danses gitanes, le 24 mai 1958 (2e photographie), avec le montreur de singes (3e photographie), à Arles, rue Genive, en 1953, « ma première bonne photographie », disait Clergue , dans le campement gitan à Rocheville (4e photographie), en 1958, ou encore le patriarche et ses petits enfants, en 1955, aux Saintes Marie de la mer (dernière photographie). Photographe mondialement connu, né à Arles à 1934 et décédé à Nîmes en 2014, Lucien Clergue fut le 1er photographe élu à l'Académie des Beaux Arts et le créateur des incontournables Rencontres de la photographie d'Arles. Si son nom est souvent associé à ceux de Picasso, de Cocteau et d'Eluard, et même s'il n'a jamais réalisé de livre aux éditions PAB, Lucien Clergue et Pierre André Benoit étaient néanmoins proches. C'est à Lucien Clergue que nous devons l'ornementation du dernier recueil de PAB, paru l'année de sa disparition, aux Éditions Fata Morgana. Intitulé Dans un désert et constituant une sorte de testament artistique de PAB, le livre est illustré de quatre photographies de l'auteur « en mémoire de PAB l'ami des livres dans sa maison de Rivières, maison des poètes et des arts » (Lucien Clergue). Après la mort de PAB, en 1993, le photographe réalise sept livres d'artistes, avec Jean-Paul Martin, le cousin de PAB, pour les Éditions de Rivières, sur des textes de PAB, René Pons, Patricia Dupuy, Gaston Puel, Michel Butor et Jacques Outin. Tous sont présentés sur notre boutique Ebay. Exemplaire à l'état de neuf, en parfait état de conservation. Très rare, peu d'exemplaires ont circulé. Signé par l'illustrateur.
