September 2001 ist wahrscheinlich der am besten dokumentierte Tag der Geschichte. Millionen Menschen sahen l…ive im Fernsehen, wie die Türme des World Trade Center in sich zusammen fielen. Die Einschätzung der Tragweite dieses Ereignisses, insbesondere in kultureller Hinsicht, hat in den letzten Jahren stark variiert und verändert sich noch in Abhängigkeit von der verstrichenen Zeit und von der kulturellen Produktion zum Thema.Nach mittlerweile neun vergangenen Jahren seit 2001 ist die zuerst postulierte Undarstellbarkeit der Anschläge nicht mehr haltbar. Viele Romane wurden seitdem über oder um 9/11 herum geschrieben, publiziert und besprochen. Zwei dieser Romane sollen in der vorliegenden Arbeit analysiert werden, Falling Man von Don DeLillo und Netherland von Joseph O Neill. Beide behandeln 9/11 auf sehr unterschiedliche Arten, bieten aber dennoch genügend Gemeinsamkeiten, damit ein Vergleich sinnvoll ist. Insgesamt geht es bei der literarischen Verarbeitung von 9/11 immer auch um die Frage, wie dieses Ereignis in Zukunft erinnert werden soll. Somit bietet sich für diese Arbeit ein erinnerungstheoretischer Ansatz an, mithilfe dessen sowohl die Nachahmung und Darstellung von individuellem Erinnern untersucht werden kann, als auch die Verhandlung von kollektiven Erinnerungen. Dabei werden auch Traumatheorie und Identitätsbildung eine zentrale Rolle spielen, denn natürlich war 9/11 ein traumatisches Ereignis. Außerdem ist eine der zentralen Thesen der Kulturwissenschaften heute, dass Erinnerungen und Identität in einer Wechselbeziehung stehen. Somit ist es auch für das aktuelle Selbstverständnis einer Kultur wichtig, wie vergangene Ereignisse kollektiv erinnert werden. Und gerade weil 9/11 auch ein historisches Ereignis ist, bleibt es dann nicht aus, nach dem Zusammenwirken von realen Geschehnissen und Literatur zu fragen.Die vorliegende Arbeit will also vor allem untersuchen, wie 9/11 in den beiden gewählten Romanen erinnert wird und welches Bild vom 11. September sich daraus für die jeweilige Gegenwart der Romane ergibt. Dabei soll gezeigt werden, dass 9/11 in beiden Romanen als traumatisches Ereignis verarbeitet wird, und zwar sowohl auf individueller als auch auf kollektiver Ebene. Weiterhin stellt sich die Frage, wo sich innerliterarische Diskurse an außerliterarische Diskurse anschließen und ob man daraus auch Aussagen zum historischen 11.
