Has the project to usher in Modernity run its full course and is now ready to be replaced by something called Post-Modern Re-examining the very idea of Modernity in architecture and drawing from a number of diverse sources such as philosophy social science art and technology Prof Mehta argues that the normal historical progression of architectural thought and production suffered an epistemological break in mid-18th century caused by the separation between architecture and engineering and resulted in increasing rationalization of architecture Critical writings of several post-Renaissance scholars and academicians aided this process Prof Mehta refers to this as Academic Architecture While the pre-Renaissance scholars were content to codify the practice of architecture the new writings actively sought to construct an identity of architecture to align it with modern science and industry The overwhelming need to validate architecture from the logico-mathematical perspective favored the cerebral over the existential qualities of architectureProf Mehta asserts that alternatives to the rationalist and positivist narratives always existed in the West and also in several non-Western cultures but the very strong foregrounding of Rationalism confined them to the academia His insightful analysis indicates that the contours of Post Rational architecture are already visible in the works of several contemporary architects 156 pp. 140 Photos (illustratore).…

Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. Departing from the conventional path of describing and explaining the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri, Professor Jaimini Mehta delves into a series of representations the Mughal city has been subjected to and concludes that there is an inexorable tension at its core embodied in the constantly shifting axes, complex rhythms, raising or lowering of the ground planes, juxtapositions of mythical symbols and the conflicting pulls of traditions and human will. The space of Fatehpur Sikri is revealed to us through perception more than through geometry. Professor Mehta's unconventional interpretation of the architecture of Fatehpur Sikri emanates from his exploration of the history of architectural representation and leads him to conclude that the tools of designing, representation and analysis, i.e. various kinds of drawings, which we normally use today, did not exist in sixteenth-century India when Fatehpur Sikri was built. These drawings, which assume our "mind's eye" hovering above the city and taking in the whole of reality at once, have failed to represent the existential lived experience of inhabitation of architecture.…

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Written over four decades, Critiquing the Modern in Architecture is a collection of essays exploring the ideological and metaphysical core of modern architecture. Author Jaimini Mehta moves architectural modernism from its primarily Eurocentric definition, interrogating the subject from the perspective on a non-western thought-world. Mehta groups his essays under three key themes: "Rethinking Modernity" explores the ideological underpinnings of the modernity/modernism binary; "The Idea of Architecture" looks at a number of issues that constitute the timeless and the invariable aspects of architecture against which the prevalent modernist discourse can be critically evaluated; and "On Praxis" looks at three contemporary architects' work and the Vienna Secessionist movement between 1890 and 1918 to articulate a critique of the underpinnings of the modern movement. Providing a new view of the modern in architecture, this book is critical reading for architectural theorists and scholars of modernism. This book is a collection of essays exploring the ideological and metaphysical core of modern architecture. Romaldo 'Aldo' Giurgola AO (2 September 1920 16 May 2016) was an Italian-Australian academic, architect, professor, and author. Giurgola was born in Rome, Italy in 1920. After service in the Italian armed forces during World War II, he was educated at the Sapienza University of Rome. He studied architecture at the University of Rome, completing the equivalent of a B.Arch. with honors in 1949. That same year, he moved to the United States and received a master's degree in architecture from Columbia University. In 1954, Giurgola accepted a position as an assistant professor of architecture at the University of Pennsylvania. Giurgola formed Mitchell/Giurgola Architects in Philadelphia with Ehrman B. Mitchell in 1958. In 1966, Giurgola became chair of the Columbia University School of Architecture and Planning in New York City, where he opened a second office of the firm. In 1980 under Giurgola's direction, the firm won an international competition to design a new Australian parliament building. In 1989, after its completion and official opening in 1988, the Parliament House was recognized with the top award for public architecture in Australia. He was later named the Ware Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Columbia. Jaimini Mehta was born in Baroda, India where he finished his basic studies in architecture before moving to University of Pennsylvania, USA to study under Louis I. Kahn with whom he also worked. Later he joined the firm of Mitchell/Giurgola Associates and remained until 1975 when he returned to India to pursue his own practice and teach. He has taught at CEPT University, Ahmedabad, M.S. University, Baroda, College of Architecture, Goa and at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at Troy, USA where he founded the School of Architecture's India Program. He has written extensively on architecture and has also co-authored with Romaldo Giurgola the first book on Louis Kahn "Louis I Kahn". He was the Hon. Director of Center for the Study of Urbanism and Architecture (CESURA). Louis Isadore Kahn (born Itze-Leib Schmuilowsky; March 5, 1901 March 17, 1974) was an Estonian-born American architect based in Philadelphia. After working in various capacities for several firms in Philadelphia, he founded his own atelier in 1935. While continuing his private practice, he served as a design critic and professor of architecture at Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957. From 1957 until his death, he was a professor of architecture at the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Kahn created a style that was monumental and monolithic; his heavy buildings for the most part do not hide their weight, their materials, or the way they are assembled. He was awarded the AIA Gold Medal and the RIBA Gold Medal. At the time of his death, he was considered by some as "America's foremost living architect." Kahn did not arrive at his distinctive architectural style until he was in his fifties. Initially working in a fairly orthodox version of the International Style, he was strongly influenced by a stay as architect-in-residence at the American Academy in Rome during 1950, which marked a turning point in his career. After visiting the ruins of ancient buildings in Italy, Greece, and Egypt, he adopted a back-to-the-basics approach. He developed his own style, as influenced by earlier modern movements, but not limited by their sometimes-dogmatic ideologies.…
