Due tothese admission, money and time pressures, pharmaceutical companies are looking for analternative in the drug development process. A very popular alternative is the outsourcingor in-house working with Contract Research Organizations (CRO). Contract ResearchOrganizations are specialized in coordination and monitoring of drug developmentactivities. Due to their focus they often offer a more sophisticated and faster process.Demographic changes, chronic diseases like cancer and diabetes, and completely newcluster of symptoms demand new therapeutically treatments. The size of the CRO marketin 2012 was around $32 billion and had an estimated market growth of around 9 - 12% for2013. Increased outsourcing and allocation of R&D money towards CRO reflects a drivingforce for prospective growth. To benefit from the good industry outlooks CROs adjusttheir service offerings and strengthen their competitive situation.More and more Contract Research Organizations consider mergers & acquisitions as avital solution to achieve their objectives. Since couple of years we can observe anincreased number of deals. Large corporations can close the gaps in the internal servicepipeline and smaller firms can use mergers as a financial exit.However, many M&A activities are considered as ineffective and contra-productive forthe shareholder value - either destroy or merely add. Depending on the study, the numbersof M&A failures vary from 50% to even 80%. Possible reasons may be not enoughintegration planning and unrealistic expectations on the cost and time. The reality showsthat it is not that easy to cut costs by simple combining two departments after a merger oracquisition. Der Dow-Jones-Industrial-Average-Index (DJIA) verlor in wenigen Minuten knapp 1000 Punkte. Der S&P 500 sank in sechs Minuten um nahezu sechs Prozent. Innerhalb von zehn Minuten wurden am Dow-Jones ca. 1,3 Milliarden Aktien gehandelt, ein Vielfaches des durchschnittlichen Volumens. Einige Aktien verloren bis zu 99 Prozent ihres Wertes. Fast ebenso schnell, wie die Aktien an Wert verloren, so erholten sie sich blitzartig in den folgenden Minuten wieder. Am Handelsschluss betrug der Verlust des DJIA im Vergleich zum Vortag nur noch drei Prozent.Dies war ein völlig überraschender Schock für die Aktienmärkte und die Finanzaufsichten. Vielmehr war der Crash eine Folge der strukturellen Veränderungen der Börse.Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit einer umfassenden Analyse des Flash Crashs. Zu diesem Zweck wird zunächst der generelle Hintergrund der Aktienmärkte beleuchtet, um einen Einblick in die Prozesse und Mechanismen der Börse zu bekommen. Weiter wird gezeigt welchen Einfluss die Entwicklung der Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme auf die Börse hat.Anschließend wird der Flash Crash genauer beschrieben und analysiert. Zunächst erfolgt anhand des offiziellen Abschlussberichts der CFTC/SEC eine exakte Betrachtung des Ablaufs. Nachfolgend werden die Konsequenzen und die durchgeführten Veränderungen der SEC auf die Geschehnisse genannt. Abschließend wird im Rahmen einer kritischen Evaluierung des Flash Crash vom 6. Mai 2010 die Notwendigkeit bzw. werden die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten zur Vermeidung erneuter Flash Crash diskutiert. Hieraus werden Implikationen zur Verbesserung des Aktienhandels und der gängigen Systeme abgeleitet. Des Weiteren wird zur Analyse des Flash Crash das Augenmerk auf algorithmische Handelssysteme gelegt, um deren möglichen signifikanten Einfluss auf den extremen Kurssprung zu untersuchen.

Wie konnte es zu solchen Kurssprüngen kommen Zunächst wurde von einem ¿Fat-Finger¿-Trade ausgegangen, bei dem sich ein Börsenhändler beim Verkauf einer Aktienposition um mehrere Nullstellen vertippt haben soll. Schnell wurde den meisten bewusst, dass die Ursache der Geschehnisse nicht so einfach sein kann. Am 30. September 2010 veröffentlichen die US-Aufsichtsbehörden einen offiziellen Abschlussbericht, der den Kurseinbruch untersuchte. Vielmehr war der Crash eine Folge der strukturellen Veränderungen der Börse.Vor diesem Hintergrund widmet sich die vorliegende Bachelorarbeit einer umfassenden Analyse des Flash Crashs. Zu diesem Zweck wird zunächst der generelle Hintergrund der Aktienmärkte beleuchtet, um einen Einblick in die Prozesse und Mechanismen der Börse zu bekommen. Weiter wird gezeigt welchen Einfluss die Entwicklung der Informations- und Kommunikationssysteme auf die Börse hat.Anschließend wird der Flash Crash genauer beschrieben und analysiert. Zunächst erfolgt anhand des offiziellen Abschlussberichts der CFTC/SEC eine exakte Betrachtung des Ablaufs. Nachfolgend werden die Konsequenzen und die durchgeführten Veränderungen der SEC auf die Geschehnisse genannt.Abschließend wird im Rahmen einer kritischen Evaluierung des Flash Crash vom 6. Mai 2010 die Notwendigkeit bzw. werden die verschiedenen Möglichkeiten zur Vermeidung erneuter Flash Crash diskutiert. Hieraus werden Implikationen zur Verbesserung des Aktienhandels und der gängigen Systeme abgeleitet.
