Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 8vo in blind-stamped brown cloth, titles in gilt. Binding tight and square, hinges firm, the tiniest touches of rubbing at the corners, spine ends pushed but very lightly rubbed, all of the gilt is bright and fresh. It is difficult to find this particular title in condition this nice. We've identified numerous points of difference between first and second printings, the present copy having all of the points of the second. When comparison shopping, the simplest way to distinguish one from the other is to note that in the first printing there is an engraved illustration on page 444; in the second printing that illustration is omitted.…

Aggiungi al carrelloOriginal blue stamped cloth, worn at edges. ix, [5]-564 pp. Internally very good. This is a comprehensive overview of the city of St. Louis, including history, significant buildings and locations, as well as and examination of social conditions, which was quite unusual for popular books of the day like this. For example, The chapter on Ways That Are Dark discusses the schemes of scammers that preyed on the citizens and visitors detailing "pocket book dropping", "snide jewelry sales", and mock auctions to cheat the prospective bidder. There is a section "Life Among the Lowly" which describes conditions in Castle Thunder, depicted as one of the worst tenement houses in the city. A most detailed look at St. Louis from an era before such honest assessments were published.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 8vo in green cloth, gilt extra, steel engraved frontis, numerous illustrations throughout, custom slipcase. Binding tight and square, hinges firm, moderate rubbing at the corners and spine ends with small amounts of loss, p.o. name in ink on the ffep. In a custom slipcase of green cloth on boards with a gilt transfer of the same design as the front board of the book. A lovely production overall. And scarce as having all the points of the first printing. We've indentified nearly a dozen points to distinguish between two printings, perhaps the most notable being the suppressed chapter titled The Social Evil with an illustration of what was then called a House of Ill Fame. Based on a census of copies commerically available and housed in institutions, the first printing appears to comprise less than a third of the total.
