Originally published as a limited edition in June 1930 by Babou and Kahane in Paris and The Fountain Press in the U.S. The scarce clothbound issue, one of an unspecified number of copies, published May 8, 1931; the rest of the edition was issued in sewn paper wrappers. In 1948, Faber reported that it had sold only 249 copies of the cloth edition, and 5341 copies of the soft-cover. Lacking the plain tissue dust jacket. Yellow cloth very slightly spotted with light spine fading and free end-papers faintly browned, otherwise a very nice internally clean, bright copy. Fragment of Work in Progress, forming pp.532-554 of Finnegans Wake, as the text stood in June of 1930. Reviewing the book in the New Statesman, G. W. Stonier, whilst calling Joyce "one of the very few great writers of our time" who deserved "not a little admiration", confessed that Haveth Childers Everywhere was "to [him] at least, almost completely unintelligible." A sentiment shared by the New York Times's Herbert Matthews, who admitted that "after an honest and patient effort, backed by a previous reading of all of Mr. Joyce's work", he found the author's "attempt to enrich and refashion the English language . . . absolutely incomprehensible". To which Joyce's advice to William Bird (1888-1963), the American journalist and publisher of Three Mountains Press in Paris during the 1920s, might serve as an apt riposte: "It's all so simple. If anyone doesn't understand a passage, all he need do is read it aloud." Even while taking heed of Joyce's subsequent warning that he "put in so many enigmas and puzzles that it will keep the professors busy for centuries arguing over what [he] meant", his instruction above sounds true. Scarce. Author's first regularly published book, consisting of thirty-six lyrical love poems, and preceded only by two broadsides. Individual poems had previously graced the pages of the London Saturday Review, Speaker and the Dublin journal, Dana. Elkin Mathews agreed to publish at the urging of poet and editor Arthur Symons, after the collection was roundly rejected by both Grant Richards and Constable. Joyce never received royalties for Chamber Music, although he claimed in a letter to his publisher that his contract called for payments after the sale of 300 copies. In 1912, he undertook the sale of copies in Trieste with some success. Although widely reported that the title refers to the sound of urine tinkling in a chamber pot - in Ulysses, Leopold Bloom reflects, "Chamber music. Could make a pun on that." - this is likely a later Joycean embellishment, lending an earthiness to a title first suggested by his brother Stanislaus and which Joyce had subsequently come to dislike. Not in the least bawdy and more a set of songs rather than a collection of poems, as Joyce revealed in a letter to English composer Geoffrey Molyneux Palmer (15 July 1909): "I hope you may set all of Chamber Music in time. This was indeed partly my idea in writing it. The book is in fact a suite of songs . . ." Besides Palmer, a number of other composers have set the poems to music, including Samuel Barber. While less frequently anthologised than the latter Pomes Penyeach (1927), these early verses received some critical acclaim, with Ezra Pound admiring their "delicate temperament" and Yeats describing, "I hear an army charging upon the land" as "a technical and emotional masterpiece". Initially rejected for publication by Ezra Pound, they were eventually published by Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare & Co. on 5 July, 1927, for the price of one shilling (12 pennies) or 12 francs. Contents clean and bright. Scarce in this condition, especially in the near-unobtainable wrapper. The title of the first poem, 'Tilly' recalls the thirteenth item in a 'Baker's dozen' and represents the bonus offering of this penny-a-poem collection.
