Paperback. Condizione: Good. A Virginia man's fight against poverty, disease, and discrimination forms the background of Fight On, My Soul. Set largely in rural Lancaster County, Virginia, Fight On, My Soul tells the story of Morgan E. Norris, one of Virginia's first black physicians, who believed in himself enough to overcome the daily struggles of his life and his time. Told by his son, this meticulously researched biography is a moving story that captures Norris's struggle to provide better conditions for his family and beloved patients. James Norris says of his father: When barriers were raised and obstacles thrown, his modus operandi would be first to try to wend his way around them, and failing that, to blast them down Norris's life spanned the contentious period from post-Reconstruction to the relentless erosion of civil liberties for blacks, the encoding of segregation into law, and finally the collapse of Jim Crow. Norris died in 1966, just about the same time as Jim Crow, but when he died it was still illegal for a white to marry a Negro in Virginia, and the American Medical Association had yet to disavow local and state societies that discriminated against Negro physicians. Norris could have chosen to go with the flow, to move north to less conflicted environs, or even pass for white. But for Norris, none of these choices fit. He chose first to become educated and then to return to his boyhood home in remote Virginia. In doing so, he fulfilled a pledge he had made to his dying father: to become a doctor and make sure no one in his little insular community would suffer as his father had. In telling his father's narrative, James Norris illuminates the delicate balance between defiance of systemic racial practices and working within a system that stubbornly resisted change.…

Paperback. Condizione: Good. Longlisted for the 2025 Women's Prize for Fiction, The Artist and the Feast is a captivating novel of love, art, food, desire and thwarted ambition, which builds propulsively over one scorching French summer in 1920s Provence. During a scorching summer in 1920s Provence, a young journalist, Joseph Adelaide, turns up at the farmhouse of reclusive artist Edouard Tartuffe, hoping to write an article about him. There, he meets Ettie, Tartuffe's niece, who appears to do everything for her uncle--from cooking and cleaning to catering to his maniacal moods. Joseph is beguiled by where he finds himself, not just by this foreign place or Tartuffe himself, but by Ettie, who watches everything so quietly from the periphery. Both Joseph and Ettie carry scars from their pasts and it's as they get to know each other that they start to lay bare those scars to themselves and to each other. As the summer wears on, and as new ideas and passions are explored, Joseph, Ettie, and Tartuffe are propelled toward a finale that reveals long-held secrets and sets the world on fire. Fans of Sarah Winman's Still Life and Paula McClain's The Paris Wife will be enchanted by this compelling novel. James, E. Rownd (illustratore). …

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Research scientist that takes part in overseas ministries? Not him, thought James Rapp, when he pictured the cautious person he was, content just being a glass technician in a reputable manufacturing company. However, gentle nudges from God quickly led James out of his comfort zone and into a thriving relationship with Jesus. In his new book, A Scientist in the Shadow of God, James recalls countless incidents where promptings from the Holy Spirit helped him to overcome personal challenges and embrace opportunities of blessing. It began with God's assistance to erase James's fear of public speaking that led him into ministry, thanks to impromptu ministry opportunities with his wife Sharon. Through miraculous events at work, James traveled overseas and soon was encouraging ministry in the Far East, primarily in Japan, China and Taiwan. What started as a Why me? mindset towards ministry later transformed into a lifelong calling in evangelism.…

"A good introduction to both New England and the joys of nature." --Booklist It's fall again, and time for Jim and Andy to help their dad run Fred's Fall Color Tours. The tourists they shuttle around are "Leaf Peepers" and, boy, do those Peepers love to ooh and aah about the dumbest things. Leaves, trees, pumpkins. Bo-o-ring. But this year, even as they poke fun at the Peepers, Jim and Andy can't help but notice how the leaves floating in the river look like a brilliantly colored island, and how the spiky tree branches seem to sweep the clouds across the night sky. Maybe the Peepers aren't so silly after all. Ransome, James E. (illustratore).…
