String-tied black paper wrappers with "Snapshots Souvenir of New York" stamped in silver on the front wrapper. Contains 39 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between .5" x .5" and 3.5" x 5.5" with captions. Very good album with some creasing and edgewear with near fine photographs. A small album housing celebrity photographs from the late 1930s. The album begins with an inscription on the first page which reads, "from Arlene and Dick Palito May 1939." Following this are commercial shots of celebrities as well as candid photos of them. Actress Dixie Dunbar is seen in more photos then anyone presumably she was a friend of Dick and Arlene's. Other photos include Gordon Oliver lounging in a garden, Johnny Downs at a rodeo, and Otis Harlan on location in the desert. Some other celebrities seen here are James Ellison, Alice Faye, Marie Wilson, Preston Foster, and Donovan Hall. One photo shows Douglas Fairbank Jr. at what appears to be a rodeo signing autographs. A page towards the end of the album contains small portraits of Spencer Tracy, Jeanette MacDonald, and Luise Rainer. A modest but nice collection of 1930s celebrities photographs.

Foxing to title and last few leaves. Ink stains to three leaves (I1-I3) still legible. Thomas Douglas (1771-1820) was the 5th Earl of Selkirk, born at Saint Mary's Isle, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland. He was noteworthy as a Scottish philanthropist who sponsored immigrant settlements in Canada at the Red River Colony. Lord Selkirk's tours through Scotland vividly revealed the unhappy state of the rural poor, and convinced him that emigration was inevitable. As a result he devised a scheme to keep the process within British control, by the establishment of a colony in the fertile valley of the Red River (now Manitoba), in the territory of the Hudson's Bay Company. This project was delayed for some years, but an alternative was found in Prince Edward Island (PEI), where the first settlers arrived in 1803. Selkirk himself visited shortly afterwards, in the course of a long tour of the United States and Canada. This volume contains a history of the Highlands and a discussion of the whole question of emigration, and concludes with a substantial description of what had been achieved in PEI. The anonymous and scarce critique that is bound up with this copy is, on COPAC, erroneously attributed to Robert Brown, but that author's 'Strictures and Remarks' on Selkirk's Observations were published under his name by Abernethy and Walker (Edinburgh) in the same year (1806). The present review, though its title is almost identical, bears no resemblance to Brown's in structure, style or length (it is double the size) and I would tentatively offer James Gordon (who wrote under the pen-name of 'Amicus') as a candidate. A selection of his letters on Selkirk's book were published under the same imprint ( 'for J. Anderson') in 1806. I have never encountered another copy of this work in the trade, though COPAC returns 10 physical copies in institutions.
