Who were the Germanic peoples ?: the author devotes considerable space to discussing this point. The reader may at first feel that a discourse at such length is undertaken merely for its own sake. A close look, however, shows the question to be fundamental, even if the labyrinth of possible definitions only makes us all the more aware of the difficulty involved in fully grasping the character of the Germanic entity, until we even begin to doubt its reality. In addition to the problem of successfully understanding the Germanic identity, we also have to face the implications, for archaeology and ethnology, of their lack of geographical base, due to the nomadic way of life which is a basic characteristic of a people often called «The Barbarians». And it has even been said that the Germanic peoples were «a political invention of Caesar». Problematical archaeology: this is the main feature in any study of this people. But, despite the temporary nature of its settlements, this race left in its wake a wealth of material of archaeological interest. From Scandinavia to Spain, from Great Britain to Italy, the Germanic peoples left their mark all over Europe?in, for example, their art forms: the illustrations in this volume demonstrate their extraordinary ability in working with, amongst other materials, gold. Furthermore, the historical data, even taking into account the insufficiency of the information and the contradictions, abound with tangible proof of the existence of the race. It should not be forgotten that it was these very same «barbarian hordes» that contributed towards the downfall of the Roman Empire. Although the problems cannot be solved, and the uncertainties cannot be eliminated, they at least merit precise definition. Professor Rolf Hachmann succeeds most admirably in this task. There can be little doubt that this book will set the scene for new approaches to Germanic archaeology and the Dark Ages of the «barbaric centuries», and will dispose of a good number of literary and religious myths.
