Light bump to the lower edge of the front board and a slight bump to one corner, concealed by the wrapper. There is also a small indentation mark to the rear board with a corresponding slight mark to the overlying wrapper. A few pages have slight neat creases to the upper corners. Dust wrapper not price clipped. A slight tear of no more than 0.5 cm to the head of the spine of the wrapper with a little associated creasing. Light rubbing to the corners of the wrapper. Slight mottling to the rear of the wrapper. A couple of slight soil marks to the front of the wrapper. The picture to the front of the wrapper remains bright and clear. A very good copy.

Previous owners purchase Invoice (1989) loosely inserted. 4vo (268 by 205 mm). Pp. xlix, [1], 484, [2] p., 3 leaves of plates, including a portrait frontis of the Duke and Duchess of Lauderdale, from a picture by Sir P. Lely. There is also a plate showing Archbishop Sharp, from a picture by Sir Peter Lely, and a plate showing The Battle of Bothwell-Bridge, from a picture by J. Wyck. Two Vignettes within the text; from the frontispiece to Zion's Plea, written by Doctor Leighton, and one from Archbishop Sharp's tomb at St Andrews. Bibliographical footnotes to text. Contemporary half calf with marbled boards and fore-edges. Gilt decorated raised bands to spine with 5 decorated compartments, lettering (Church of Scotland) to one compartment. Marbled endpapers and bookplate of George Gilpin (Gilpin's of Kendal) to front pastedown. Small 20mm loss to bottom of spine, and decoration and lettering faded. Joints tender and starting to split but sound. Rubbing to edges, and corners slightly bumped. Some rubbing to marbled boards. Offsetting to pages opposite plates and Vignettes. Faint occasional foxing throughout, mainly to blank margins. Plates & Vignettes clean (two plates have loose tissue guards). A good copy. **. Included is a 'Bibliographical Notice' (v-xxii); A Sermon, Preached in the Toolbooth Church of Edinburgh, on Sept 3 1699, By Mr James Kirkton, Being the last sermon that ever he preached. (xxxv-xlix). There is also another sermon preached by Kirton included, 'Heavens Bliss'. The section of James Russell's Account of the Murder of Archbishop Sharp, 1679. Includes a Letter from Sir William Sharp, the Archbishops Son, to Sir James Baird, at Banff, giving an Account of his Father's Murder. Dated, St Andrew's, 10 May, 1679 (on Saturday next is the funeral). **. The bookplate of George Gilpin, shows a wild boar. The story goes that in the time of King John, the then Baron of Kendal rewarded Richard de Gilpin, also known as 'Richard the Rider' for his bravery in killing the 'Wild Boar of Westmoreland' that had been terrorising local villages. He was rewarded with land in and around Kentmere (Lake District). From this time on the Gilpin's crest included a sable boar on a gold background. Gilpin's ancestors resided in Kentmere Hall, Westmorland (Cumbria).
